Liz Spetz Why Bullies Succeed

297-8804
Halloween is a day of make believe and scary images. Everyone knows it’s a spoof and that
it’s just for fun. However, there are people who make scary times an everyday event.
They’re not ghoulies or ghosties but real life bullies.
We haven’t much problem with bullying in our school but in other locations it has lead to
tragic consequences. One school in the news lately has suffered four suicides by children
who have been literally been harassed and bullied to death. How does this kind of thing hap-
pen in a society that is so well informed and educated?
The theories about children as bullies are numerous but I suspect that the real source of their
power is outside their own personal aggression. As part of a close-knit group of people, we
can see every day when someone is being singled out for punishment. We see it, it makes us
cringe but we do little or nothing to intervene. Why?
There are two major reasons that are as true for children as for adults. First, the unwritten
MLS #377454 law that says “never tell”, never rat out your colleagues or your peers to those in higher au-
thority. The second is fear; the real possibility of retaliation combined with the belief that
www.REALTOR.ca even your friends won’t have the nerve to stand up for you. These two factors combine to
allow bullies to succeed because we let them intimidate us. It worked for the Mafia and it
works just as well for children.
To combat this difficult impasse we try to provide safe means for children to get the mes-
sage out to someone who has the power to protect victims. Obviously, this doesn’t always
work. Too often the message fails to be delivered or is misinterpreted. Once or twice
missed, the opportunity to change events may not come again. Both victims and passive
observers become isolated and feel powerless. The heroes in the movies are the ones whose
