His research is in the broad area of acoustics, vibration. His focus is on mathematical
formulation and analytical solution of problems in dynamics and acoustics. He has made

Dr. Gnanamoorthy, R. Professor

Dr. Krishna Kannan received his Ph.D. in 2004 and Masters in 2000 both from Texas A&M
University in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for Thermax after his B.E. (from PSG
College of Technology) for about an year. After his PhD, he continued in the same group
with Prof. K. R. Rajagopal as a postdoctoral fellow. He joined IIT Madras as a faculty in the

His current research interests include Mechanics of filled elastomers, Thermodynamical
frameworks for polymer crystallization and reacting systems, Constitutive modelling of
viscoelastic materials, and Constitutive modelling of implicit materials.

Dr. Manoj Pandey received his PhD degree from Department of Theoretical and Applied
Mechanics at Cornell University in 2006 and B.Tech. degree from IIT Madras in 2001 prior
to that. He was a Post Doctoral research associate at the Sonic MEMS lab at Cornell from
2009-2012. He also worked at Finite Element company Abaqus from 2006-2009 and glass
manufacturing company Corning from 2010-2011. He was a visiting faculty at IIT
411, Machine Design Hyderabad from June-October 2012 before joining IIT Madras.
Dr. Manoj Pandey Assistant Professor

His research interests are in the computational mechanics and nonlinear dynamics based
study of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS). This involves multi-physics
simulations of these devices based on reduced order nonlinear model generation. He also
works on FEM based multi-scale problems especially related to homogenization methods
applied to plastically deforming honeycomb structures and masonry.

Dr. Narasimhan Swaminathan received his PhD from Georgia Institute of Technology, USA
in 2009. He worked as Post Doctoral Research Research Associate at The Universtiy of
Wisocnsin Madison, USA for three years from 2009 to 2012 before joining IIT Madras.

Swaminathan Associate Professor His research interest includes multiscale modeling of complex phenomenon in a wide

range of materials. He works on materials for energy applications such as nuclear
materials, Li-ion batteries and solid oxide fuel cells. He also conducts atomistic
simulations to understand the interface properties between polymers and other
materials.

Dr. Piyush Shakya received his Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT
Delhi in 2015. He finished his Dual Degree (B. Tech in Mechanical and M. Tech in Product
Design) from IIT Madras in 2006. He worked as “Member R&D” in TVS motor company,
Hosur from 2006 to 2010. Prior to joining IIT Madras, he was a Research Fellow in the

His research interests include condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, and prognosis. He is
interested in developing condition monitoring techniques capable of accounting for
different types of variations present in practical scenarios (dataset to dataset variations,
defect topography variations etc.).

Prior to joining IIT Madras Prabhu Rajagpopal worked as a post-doctoral researcher at


Imperial College London where he developed hybrid modeling techniques for ultrasonic
inspection of welds on a Rolls Royce funded project. While in the UK he served as a co-
consultant to companies including BAE systems, British Energy Ltd and Frazer Nash
Consultancy. He is currently the principal investigator in a BRNS sponsored project on
advanced NDE techniques for the nuclear industry, a four-year European Union FP-7

Dr. Prabhu Rajagopal funded international collaborative project on the health monitoring of wind farms and a

DST-funded four-year Indo-German consortium project on the inspection of adhesive
bonded joints for the public transport bus industry.

His areas of expertise include guided ultrasonic inspection, modeling of elastic wave
phenomena and analysis of wave scattering.

Dr. P.Ramkumar joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical


Engineering in IIT Madras in 2012. Prior to coming to IIT Madras, he was an Associate

Dr. Ratna Kumar Annabattula received his PhD from University of Groningen, The
Netherlands in 2011. He received his B.E. (Andhra University) and M.E. (Indian Institute
of Science) in 2002 and 2004, respectively, both in Mechanical Engineering. He was as a

Dr. A. Seshadri Sekhar received his PhD from IIT Madras, India in 1993. He has joined IIT
Kharagpur in 1993 as a lecturer and got promoted as Professor in 2003. He has published
over 150 papers in international journals and conferences. He is the co-author of the book

Dr. Shankar Krishnapillai is a Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute


of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). He obtained his bachelors degree (BTech) in
Mechanical Engineering from College of Engineering, Trivandrum (Kerala University) in
1988. He holds a Doctorate (DPhil) from the University of Oxford, UK in 1996 in the area

Dr Sourav Rakshit received his PhD and ME from IISc Bangalore in 2012 and 2006
respectively. He is a BE in mechanical engineering from Jadavpur University. He was a
postdoctoral researcher at University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 2012 to 2014,

Section worked as a scientist in the reactor engineering division in BARC from 2000-2004.

Sourav’s research interests are in multibody dynamics, robotics, biomechanics,


optimization, and computation methods in general.

Dr. Sujatha graduated with her B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT-Madras in
1992, her MSME from the University of Toledo, USA in 1994, and after a long stint in the
prosthetics industry, her PhD from the Ohio State University in 2007. She joined the
faculty at IIT-Madras in 2008.

Dr. Sujatha’s work is in the areas of Prosthetics and Orthotics, Biomechanics and

biomechanically and economically suited to Indian lifestyles and conditions. Dr. Sujatha’s
students have won awards at prestigious national competitions for their projects in
assistive devices and her group has also applied for several Indian patents for assistive
device designs. She is a co-inventor on several US and international patents for prosthetic
designs from her prior work.

Dr. C. Sujatha received her PhD from IIT Madras. She has been a faculty at IIT Madras
since 1984. She has guided 10 PhD, 21 M.S. (Research) students till date.

Born in Madras in 1978, Dr. Sundararajan Natarajan (Sundar) joined the Machine Design
Section, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras on 10th Sep 2014, as an
Assistant Professor. Before this Sundar was a post-doctoral research fellow in the School
of Civil & Environmental Engineering, The University of New South Wales, Sydney,
Australia. Sundar graduated in Computational Mechanics with a PhD from Cardiff
