Module 2 - Finite Element Modeling

Due by Friday, June 03, 2011

Question 1
The uniform, linearly elastic bar shown is fixed at both ends. Force P is applied at node
2. Use the finite element method to compute nodal displacements and stresses in each
element in terms of P, L, A, and E. Compare these results with exact values.

Question 2

The plane structures shown consist of rigid weightless members and springs.
Determine the stiffness matrix that operates on the two d.o.f. shown. Rotation θ is
small. Assume that the roller can apply upward or downward force to the trapezoidal
block.
Question 3
In the plane structure shown, rigid blocks are connected by linear springs. Assume that
only horizontal displacements are allowed. Write the structure equilibrium equations [K]
{D} = {F} in terms of spring stiffnesses ki, displacement d.o.f. ui, . and applied loads Fi.

Question 4
The plane structure shown consists of rigid weightless bars connected by linear springs,
each of stiffness k. Degrees of freedom are horizontal translations ui and small rotations
θi for i = 1,2, as shown. Vertical motion and out-of-plane displacements are not allowed.
Determine the 4 by 4 structure stiffness matrix in terms of k and b.
