THE PROBLEM OF WATER SUPPLY AT LOHEGAON

VILLAGE
Abstract:

Water supply is one of the most important sectors in development. Access

to water supply is the basic human needs and rights. The objective of the
study was access the water supply system in the village of lohegaon, a
rural village in Tal. Haveli Dist. Pune, State, Maharashtra. Identify water
supply system problem in the village.

1. Introduction.

Village lohegoan is situated in Haveli Taluka of Pune District.

Maharashtra. Lohegaon is a small satellite town of Pune, with the
population close to 11,000 people. A former small village, the town is
currently located somewhere between the cities of Pimpri and Pune. It is
a typical rural community with most population.

This water supply scheme is catering the need of only one half of total
village population which is not at all sufficient. Secondly the yield of
existing well is not sufficient especially in summer season also with
monsoon and winter season. As the development is very fast and hence a
new water supply scheme is urgently needed. Purpose of redesign water
supply system is to achieve daily water demand of every person in the
village of lohegaon. Third reason was the water is supplied has a poor
treatment before supply in village.
2. Objectives.
 To give importance of water supply sources to village.
 To ensure water supply in village and habitations suffering of
water supply.
 Identify water supply system problems in the village.
 To provide information about water supply needed by village
people.
3. Variables and definitions.
 Water supply

This is the amount charged to users for the full amount of water supplied
on a low level via the supply network. This includes both the rates and
tariffs paid for water supply (self-invoicing). Monetary amounts recorded
in the survey are ion a cash basis in other words that effectively charged
in the reference financial year, even where water consumption may have
been in previous years.

Moreover, amounts charged are collected by delegation of invoicing in

order to defray high-level water piping projects carried out by bodies or
institutions (regulation taxes or water use rates of hydrographical
confederations, piping taxes of water companies or of autonomous
communities).

 Water collection

Water abstraction consists of water withdrawal from a natural source and

its storage for further use. This includes the service damming and piping
via main pipelines. Among others, a distinction is made between
collecting surface water and groundwater, using probes or perforations.

 Fresh surface water

Continental surface water is water with surface current or retained above

a hollow, in other words, dammed. Water with a surface current including
nature river courses (rivers, streams, ravines, etc) and of artificial courses
(channeling systems for irrigation, drainage systems and rafts and
artificial dams).

 Fresh Groundwater

This type of water resource refers to water that has been extracted,
generally, aquifers are all the all permanent and provisional water
deposits existing in the subsoil, replenished both artificially and naturally,
of sufficient quality for a specific use. This category includes water
contained in the phreatic layer and in geological depressions.

4. Project Methodology.
 To Assess The Existing Water Supply Distribution System:

A water supply scheme designed for population of 11,000 is there in

lohegaon village. This water supply scheme is catering the need of only
one half of total village population which is not at all sufficient. Secondly
the yield of existing supply well is not sufficient especially in summer
season with also monsoon and winter season. As the development is very
fast and hence a new water supply scheme is urgently needed.

 Visited Existing Water Supply Distribution system of lohegaon

village:

After deciding the project topic we visited in lohegaon village we had

seen whole water supply distribution system. The starting point the
system khadakwasla dam to water filtration plant (Jal Shudhikaran
Kendra) in sinhagad road Pune. Water is first purified here which is used
for domestic purpose. intake well thenusing pump water is pumped to
ESR (elevated storage reservoir) then chemicals like chlorine and
bleaching powder than distribute to village. Maintaining the integrity of
the specifications.

 The Result of Conducting the Survey with observations,

interview, data collection.
1. Problem of Irregular Water Supply-

Counting, residents of lohegaon continue to cry foul against civic workers

for failing to cater to the water scarcity problem. The area receives water
once in every 4-5 days, for only an hour, say residents.

Residents claim to have sent several complaint letters to the Pune

Municipal Corporation (PMC) but in vain. They have sent a letter
including 200 signatures of residents to the authorities concerned,
demanding to take an immediate action.

Disappointed with the PMC workers’ slacking response towards the

worrisome issue, “we residents have an issue about the water supplied to
us by the PMC. The groundwater availability is less in this area so it gets
difficult for residents. Initially, when we complained to the civic body,
we received regular water supply for a few days. However, after the
change of operator, the water supply has again become intermittent.”

The operator of Bund Garden Water Supply Officer is responsible for the
lack of water supply in Lohegaon. “The operator tells us that they do not
have enough water. However, PMC’s figures suggest that they have
enough water for the city to last for the next four months. The operator
promotes illegal connection of water and provides us with less water,”
Operator said “We are looking into the matter. New people will be
appointed, we have lack man power.”

Meanwhile, residents of lohegaon are relying on private tankers for water

supply.

5. Conclusion.

In present study of lohegaon village and water supply problem was

studied, which was located at district Pune, State Maharashtra, India,
daily water demand , survey of village lohegaon was done. The water is
supplied has a poor treatment before supply in village. Existing water
supply well is not sufficient in summer, monsoon, and winter season. A
new water supply scheme is urgently needed by demand of every person
in the village of lohegaon.
