STOCKYARD
SYSTEMS
Australia’s Best Stock Yards,
designed by stockmen for stockhandlers

Fourth Edition
MISSION STATEMENT
“To develop, manufacture and market a range of stock handling equipment that optimises value for clients
through increased stock flow and minimal stress for operator and stock.
Natural stock behaviour will dictate product design and client value will be maximised via cost / safe stock
throughput parameter ratios.
National Stockyard Systems does not seek to provide a solution for every requirement, but does seek to
provide a product that offers superior value and performance in chosen fields”.

MURRAY SCHAEFER
Managing Director - National Stockyard Systems
Tel: 02 4932 1363 Mobile: 0425 315 913
“The aim of this brochure is to assist clients to make an informed decision to make
your stock work easier with less stress on your stock and improve your overall
bottom line”.

ALLAN GRAY, “Grandale” Geurie

“I was a neighbour of Murray Schaefer for 10 years at Manilla. The rugged terrain
of his 5000 acres of leased country called for good horses and dogs.
He contact managed another 8000 acres for absentee Sydney owners and ran a
contract fencing and yard building business on the side. He built numerous sets of
yards and well over 500 km of fencing on many Northern NSW properties.
Murray was an outstanding horseman and had an excellent team of dogs and was
widely regarded as one of the district’s best stockmen.
When he joined Metalcorp Steel in the early 90’s we lost a good neighbour but it
is very gratifying to see him back in the Agricultural Industry supplying what I think
are the best valued and practical yards on the market today”.

BILL CROLL “Gundamulda” Barraba

Sales - Tel: 02 6783 3164 Mobile: 0427 003 375
Bill is a well known and respected Northern NSW stockman and horseman and is
involved with many community projects. As well as managing the family property he
has been a shearer, drover, roughrider and contract fencer / yard builder, and is a
passionate advocate of low stress stock handling both in the paddock and the yard.

“I don’t see my role as a salesman, as the yards and crushes sell themselves. I get a
great kick of sharing my 45 years of stock handling experience and helping clients to
choose best what will suit their operation”.

GERALD HICKS, Bucca Road, Nana Glen
Crush Manufacturer - Tel: 02 6654 3088
The NSS crushes are manufactured by Gerald Hicks who is directly responsible for
many of the innovations that have improved stock handling equipment world wide
over the past 25 years.
Gerald grew up on the typical family farm in Western Australia and relocated to
Guyra on the early 1980’s.
He was one of the foundation partners of Ruddweigh Australia in 1980 and
designed the Ruddweigh scales and crushes.
In 1990 Gerald founded Carinya Products, designing and manufacturing the full
range of Carinya crushes. Metalcorp Steel purchased Carinya Products in 1994
and retained Gerald as manager until he “retired” in 2003.
Gerald had owned and operated his own property since leaving the family farm.
He has an inherent understanding of stock management.
Gerald has been designing and building the innovative range of National
Stockyard Systems crushes since 2005.

MICHAEL SCHAEFER
Manufacturing Manager/Sales - Tel 02 4932 1363 Mob 0432 678 748
“I hope to go back to the land one day. Dad was a 5th generation farmer and
I would like to continue the family heritage. In the meantime I enjoy making a
valuable contribution to the business. Erecting yards, talking with and learning from
customers are the most satisfying parts of the job, I also enjoy spending time at my
uncle’s property at Walcha”.

KEN BURKINSHAW, “Amaroo” Lockhart

Tel 02 6928 2258
“We needed 2 sets of yards. I did my homework very carefully before deciding on
National Stockyard Systems. After purchasing the yards Murray approached me and
asked if I was able to assist with sales at some Field Days.
I don’t see it as selling but it is a pleasure to have interaction with a great team of
people and demonstrating products I believe in”.

DANIEL LOCKREY
Manufacturing/Sales Tel 02 4932 1363 Mob 0427 030 190
Daniel grew up on the family farm at Manilla. Daniel’s father Stuart is regarded as
one of Manilla’s best operators.
“If I was just making the standard old panels and gates that are available
everywhere then I would not enjoy it. It is a really great manufacturing team that I
work with, and innovation, practicality and quality of workmanship is encouraged
in the factory. I really look forward to assisting with sales as well”

floors are prone to noise and rust.

All ramps have a closed in base to prevent legs getting outside of the ramp. Overhead bracing is
standard on both ends of the ramp to prevent side spread.
Note: The bumper board at the front of the ramp is adjustable to cater for different height
trucks. Flat load out platforms with mangate also available.
Platform standard lengths are 1.0 meters and 2.1 meters.

The central pound allows for one person drafting and transfer of stock anywhere through the yards.
When utilising the pound for drafting the slam pin is rolled back so the pin does not protrude. The stop prevents the
gates having to be latched every time an animal is drafted. One person can draft 4 separate ways with a 6 sided
pound (5 gates, 1 panel) and 7 separate ways with an 8 sided pound.

A 6-sided pound of 2.6 meter gates has a diameter of 5.2 meters.

This is comfortable for one person drafting. A 7-sided pound has
a diameter of 5.4 meters utilising 2.3 meter gates and an 8-sided
pound has a 6 meter diameter utilising 2.3 meter gates. Panels larger
than this result in the handler losing control over their cattle.

The best finish is to stamp your concrete with a

28
The Joining System
Best of both worlds “the environment of permanent yards with the
flexibility and price of relocatable yards“

• The joining system utilises elongated hole cleats, which mean that the panels will follow most ground
undulations.
• Bolts are M12-30 hot dip galvanised with a wide flat head. Washers are hot dipped 32mm wide and nuts
are standard hot dipped.
• This system is protected by Australian Registered Design No 14534/2005 and totally
eliminates the noise associated with conventional pinning systems.
• Whilst eliminating panel rattle noise, gate sag etc the joining system will offer a degree of movement if a
beast hits a panel hard.

• It only takes about an extra 10% time to build the NSS yards compared to others. (Dropping a pin in or
putting a nut and washer on the bolt is the quickest and easiest part of yard erection).

• Delivery and erection is a service available to clients if required.

• The need for cost-adding false posts that others require is eliminated.

• There is no gap at the top of the panels for an animal (particularly horses) to get a leg caught in.

• Note: The third middle lug on Hunter 6 and Bullock Panels. This transfers impact on the
gate to the associated panel posts which means that the gate frame cannot bow and the
slam catch pop under pressure (Hunter 6 and Bullock 5 and 6 only).

The Gate
The gate system and joining system are protected by Australian Registered
Design No 11434/2005 and Australian Patent No. 2009100939.
This revolutionary gate and joining system was also awarded the
Encouragement Award at the prestigious “The Land & NSW Farmers Association
Farm Inventor Of The Year Competition” at Ag Quip 2005.

7 Note when the latch handle is rotated the pin

withdraws behind the gate edge. This position

to come free of the keeper. These are part of the
advantages that Australian Registered Design No

Calf Marking
• Larger producers, where through put is paramount may require a separate calf race and force.

• Swing gates with slam catches are preferential to slide gates, especially at the front of the race where it will
open against the cradle.

• The calf race is adjustable width to a maximum of 450 m and the width can be adjusted on property to suit
individual requirements. (400mm or 16” is the traditional standard).

• (Many producers are utilising a squeeze crush and mark calves standing up. This practice is very effective
as it is a one-person operation and only requires a small increase in skill to mark a calf standing up
utilising a National Stockyard Systems squeeze crush).

Standard calf race height is 1400mm with

6 rails and a gap of 147mm between the
main rails.

Anti-Back swing gate maintains calf flow and is extremely quick

to engage to hold the next calf ready for the cradle.
New improved anti-back swing gate (not pictured)

Note: National Stockyard Systems supply an

extra rail on both sides of the calf race to
minimise calves putting heads between the rails.
(This eliminates the need for rubber belt to be
added).

36
Manways are wide enough to prevent an animal getting
caught by the hips if the gate is accidently left open, or they
can be used to file stock through if required. Slam catch is
standard on Hunter and Bullock and they are included in most
plans, thus are not a hidden extra.
An extra slide is also standard on all 5 and 6 panel race
designs.

The bolt together system makes erection of custom made

panels for front entrances etc. easy.

Cattle Drafting
Drafting cattle is becoming more frequently required due to changes such
as tighter feeder weights, the continuing dry, cell grazing, early weaning and
overall improved management practices.

NSS has developed a series of drafters that allow 1 person drafting and the
very quick Glenrock Overhead Drafter that requires more than 1 person.

38
Budget Swivel Draft/Baulk Combination
Slower than the Hicks Drafter. But still gives quick uninterrupted access to the head. There is only the on/side gate to
unchain and the whole unit will swivel out of the way. About the same price as the conventional 2 gate in frames.
The unit includes the 2 swivel posts which attach to the front of the headbail/crush. The swivel posts allow the unit
to clear the animal’s head while it is in the head bail. The swivel posts rotate out of the way to allow clean access
to the head. The unit can be opened up in the centre to form a rigid laneway for loading.
Only available in GP rail

Basic Draft with Block Gate

Cheaper and easy to use than the conventional 2 gates in frame. The 2 draft gates are joined at the top. This means
the operator only has to move one gate to move both gates. In association with the swivel posts on the headbail/
crush the unit allows for quick drafting and access. The block gate (GP 5 rail or Hunter 5 rail only) on the ramp
will block an animal if it is missed while attempting to catch it.
Available in all panel styles.

39
CCC Speed Draft/Baulk Combination
The CCC Speed Drafter enables 5 gates to be worked from the 1 location. This is as quick and more reliable than
air operated. There is a manual lever control to the 2 front draft gates enabling a 3 way draft whilst standing at the
back of the crush. If an NSS V-Race is incorporated leading into the crush the sliding gate on the V-Race section
prior to the crush can also be opened and closed via a direct linkage from this point. Obviously the crush entrance
and exit can also be operated from this single position. This system is brilliant when weighing cattle.
If access to the head is required there is a manual 3 way draft between the Baulk Gate and the Speed Gates.
Every gate on the unit will remain where it is supposed to until moved by the operator (even on a very windy day).
The first time this unit was used 150 steers had a HPG implant, the associated triangler ear notch, a 5-in-1
vaccination and a backline treatment, all completed in under 21/2 hours. Throughput, with 3 people, was on
average one steer in under a minute

Glenrock in race Drafter

Australian Registered Design No. 14008/2008
A revolutionary in-race drafter with a blocking gate and a 3-Way draft that is all quickly operated by only 3 handles
from the crow’s nest. Possibly, the quickest and safest way to draft cattle available on the market today. The first
time this drafter was used, (in conjunction with an NSS V-Race) 450 cows and 380 calves were drafted three ways
in 90 minutes (calves, wets & drys). Since then “Glenrock Station” have ordered three more of these drafters.

Race panels are availble in 6 Rail Bullock (as pictured) or 7 Rail

Hunter. The lower gaps prevent weaners and calves getting their
heads through the rails and minimises the opportunity for cattle
to turn around. The top gap still gives good operator access for
back-lining etc.
41
Chris Thomas, Gloucester
“I am extremely happy with the yards. They are brilliant and so easy to
use. Also replacing the panel with a gate at the head of the race means we
can quickly let our cattle out of the race after back-lining etc. without them
rattling through the crush”.

Pneumatic / Air operated

A full range of pneumatic / air operated slide gates, drafters and crushes is
available from National Stockyard Systems. Full remote control operation
is available at a fraction of the cost of conventional remote control with
multiple remote control key-pads for each yard. This means that any person
working in the yard can open any gate from a distance. An added bonus
is that everything can be operated manually if the air compressor or power
fails.

To calculate area requirements refer to page 23.

The table above refers to a complete round yard.
Example: 20 x 4.0m panels builds a round area of 504m2. 10 x 4.0m panels used as a half moon
holding yard adjacent to an existing yard will have an area of 252m2.

62
Increasing panel size on outer yards from 2.2m to 3.2m increases the yard capacity
by an amazing 112%. Believe it or not the increase is 229% utilising 4.0m panels.

The increase is 64% over 2.5m panels and 30% over 2.8m panels.

NSS 4.0m panels in Hunter and Bullock have been used by many of NSS clients.

Cost savings available by utilisation of the longer panels are considerable.

Blue yard 15 x 4.0m panels.

Green yard 15 x 3.2m panels.
Red yard 15 x 2.2m panels.
