16.4 Salient Observations:

16.4.1 Laboratory tests:
16.4.1.1 PTO Performance:
i) The backup torque is 18.0%
ii) The specific fuel consumption corresponding to maximum power was observed
as 298 g/kWh, against the declared value of 295 g/kWh. This is considered on
higher side for this power range of tractor.

16.4.1.2 Hydraulic Performance:

Maximum lifting capacity through out the range of lift at hitch point was observed as
5.21 kN against the declared value of 6.1 kN, which is 14.6% less and does not meet
the requirement of tolerance limit specified as per IS:12207-2008. It should be looked
for improvement.

16.4.1.3 Mechanical Vibration:

The amplitude of mechanical vibration on various assemblies marked as (*) in
chapter-8 of this test report is on higher side especially at the right foot rest,
operator’s seat and steering control wheel. This calls for dampening down of
vibrations to improve the operational comfort and service life of the component.

16.4.1.4 Linkage drawbar:

The dimension “B” (refer Fig.1) of linkage drawbar does conform to IS:12953:1990.
This needs to be looked into for necessary corrective action.

16.4.1.5 Specifications of Power Take Off Shaft:

The dimension “dΦ” (Refer fig-2) of PTO shaft does not meet the requirement of
IS:4931-1995. This needs to be looked into for necessary corrective action.

16.4.1.6 Operator's seat:

i) The operator’s seat does not meets the requirements of IS:12343:1998 for
following parameter:
a) Length & width of seat
b) Provision for adjustment for driver’s mass.
c) Vertical distance from SIP to clutch pedal, brake pedal & centre of steering
control wheel.
d) Longitudinal distance from SIP to differential lock pedal.
e) Lateral distance from SIP to outer brake pedal.
These should be looked into for compliance.
ii) Longitudinal adjustment provided on operator’s seat i.e., forward and rearward
from the mid position was observed as ± 25 mm against the minimum and
optimum requirement of ± 25 and ± 100 mm respectively. In view of enhancing
comfort level of operator. This may be looked into for increasing.

CENTRAL FARM MACHINERY TRAINING & TESTING INSTITUTE - BUDNI

T-674/1180/2009 KUBOTA B 2420 TRACTOR – Commercial (Initial) 9

16.4.1.7 Labelling Plate:

i) The labelling plate does not meet the requirements of IS: 10273-1987 with
regard to declaration of year of manufacture, maximum PTO power and
specific fuel consumption. This needs to be looked into for necessary
corrective action.

ii) On labeling plate the chassis number of the tractor has been punched as
30008EA whereas on chassis of the tractor it is punched as B2420D30008
only. The code for month & year of manufacturing of the tractor should be
punched on the chassis of the tractor.

16.4.1.8 Field Performance:

16.4.1.8.1 Dry land operation:
i) The average depth of operation during M.B. ploughing, was observed as
9 cm to 10 cm only, which is considered unsatisfactory for this operation.

ii) The tractor has no provision for track width adjustment of front & rear
wheels; this limits the use of tractor for intercultural operation.

iii) Rear working light (plough light) is not provided on the tractor, for operation
in the field during night. As per clause 4.1.7 of IS: 14683-1999, at least one
lamp projecting a general flood pattern of light should be provided at rear.

16.4.1.9 Wet land cultivation (Puddling operation):

The manufacturer has recommended that the tractor is not suitable for wet land
cultivation (puddling operation). Therefore, the fact that the tractor is not suitable
for wet land cultivation should be mentioned clearly and boldly in all the marketing
literature relevant to the product.

16.5 Maintenance / Service Problems:

Indicator for air cleaner filter clogging has not been provided on tractor. This may
be provided for guidance of operator.

16.6 Recommendation with regard to safety on tractor

The following requirements, inter alia, may be considered for incorporation on the
tractor:
i) Provision for spark arresting device in exhaust system.

ii) The working clearance between the position control and 4WD engaging lever
may be provided as per IS: 12239 (Part-2) – 1999.
iii) Front towing hook.

iv) “Minimum cautionary notice” as per clause 11.2 of IS:12239 (part-2)-1999.

v) Power take –off master shield.

16.7 Adequacy of Literature supplied with machine:

The following literature was supplied with the tractor for reference during the test.
a) Operator’s manual

b) Illustrated part list

c) Workshop manual.

The supplied literature was found adequate except the following.

i) As per operator manual page no. 36, the coolant has been specified as fresh
clean water with anti- freeze, whereas during the test, Kubota LLC-N-50F
(Kubota long life coolant-N-50%) was recommended. This may be included
in operator’s manual.

ii) Fuel saving tips.

The operator’s manual may be updated & also brought out in National as well as
other regional languages for guidance of users.
