Answer all the questions below: 8+8+9

1. Find the directional derivative of 𝑓 at 𝑃 in the direction of 𝑎:

𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑧 2 ; P = (−3,0,4); a = i + j + k.
𝑢 𝑑𝑧 𝑑𝑧
2. Given that 𝑧 = 𝑒 𝑥𝑦 , 𝑥 = 2𝑢 + 𝑣, 𝑦 = 𝑣 . Find 𝑑𝑢 and 𝑑𝑣 using chain rule.
3. Determine whether the statement is True of False. Explain your answer:
i) By definition, a function 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) is differentiable at (𝑥0 , 𝑦0 ) provided both
𝑓𝑥 (𝑥0 , 𝑦0 ) and 𝑓𝑦 (𝑥0 , 𝑦0 ) are defined.
ii) If 𝑓𝑥 and 𝑓𝑦 are both continuous at (𝑥0 , 𝑦0 ) then so is 𝑓.
