Berfungsi menunjukkan tingkat perbandingan kata sifat (adjective) atau kata keterangan

(adverb of manner) antara sesuatu yang sama, lebih, dan paling.

Ada 3 jenis Degree of Comparison:

A. Possitive degree (Tingkat biasa)


Tingkat ini menunjukkan kesetaraan/ sama.

. . . as . . . as . . .
S1 + to be / Verb + as + Adj. / Adv + as + S2
Example :

1. Sonia is beautiful. Her sister is beautiful.


Sonia is as beautiful as her sister.
S1 to be as + Adj. + as S2

2. She rides a bicycle slowly. Gustav rides a bicycle slowly.


She rides as slowly as Gustav
S1 Verb as + Adj.+ as S2

. . . the same . . . as . . .
S1 + to be / Verb + the same+ Noun / Adv + as + S 2

Example :

3. I am 14 years old. Dina is 14 years old.


I am the same age as Dina.
S1 to be the same + Noun + as S2

B. Negative degree (Tingkat perbandingan negatif)


Tingkat ini menunjukkan ketidak kesetaraan/ tidak sama.

S1 + to be / Verb + not + as + Adj. / Adv + as + S2

Example :

4. Sonia is diligent. Her sister is lazy.


Sonia’s sister is not as diligent as Sonia.
S1 to be not as + Adj. + as S2

5. My watch is Rp. 100.000,- Gustav’s bag is Rp. 200.000,-.


My watch is not as expensive as Gustav’s bag.
S1 to be not as + Adj.+ as S2
C. Comparative degree (Tingkat lebih)
Tingkat ini menunjukkan perbandingan antara 2 hal yang satu melebihi yang lain.

S1 + to be / Verb + - er + than + S2

. . . more . . . than . . .
S1 + to be / Verb + more + Adj. +than + S2

Example :

1. Elephant A is bigger than elephant B.


2. John runs 10 KM/Hour. Budi runs 5 KM/Hour.
John is faster than Budi.

The black camera is more expensive than red camera.

 Satu/ dua suku kata ditambah (– er.)

D. Superlative degree (Tingkat paling)


Tingkat ini menunjukkan perbandingan antara 3 hal atau lebih..

. . . - est S + to be / Verb + the + Adj. + - est (+ Complement)

the most . . . S + to be / Verb + the + most + Adj.(+ Complement)

Complement tidak wajib digunakan.

Example :
1. Diana is 140 cm. Rita is 145 cm. Nova is 150 cm.
Nova is the tallest of all.
S to be the +Adj. + - est C

2. Dona’s socks are Rp. 15.000,00. Jono’s socks are Rp. 11.500,00. Chiko’s socks are
Rp. 9.700,00
Dona’s socks are the most expensive of all.
S to be the + most + Adj. C

Rules at a Glance:
Adjective form Comparative Superlative

Only one syllable, with more Add -er: Add -est:


than one vowel or more lighter, neater, faster, taller, lightest, neatest, fastest,
than one consonant at the neater, deeper tallest. neatest, deepest
end. Examples:
light, neat, fast, tall, neat,
deep

Only one syllable, ending in Add -r:


E. Examples: wider, finer, cuter Add -st:
wide, fine, cute widest, finest, cutest

Only one syllable, with one Double the consonant, and Double the consonant, and
vowel and one consonant at add -er: hotter, bigger, add -est:

Change y to i, then add -er:
Two syllables, ending in Y. Change y to i, then add -est:
