EXPERIMENT 5

DETERMINATION OF THE SOLUBILITY PRODUCT

CONSTANT OF CALCIUM HYDROXIDE

GUIDES FOR DISCUSSION (65 pts)

1. Describe what is happening during the establishment of the equilibrium dissociation of Ca(OH)2.
Elaborate on the meaning and significance of the solubility product constant (Ksp) and molar solubility
(s) (20 pts)
2. What is the Ksp expression for Ca(OH)2, how was the Ksp determined through the
experiment conducted. What about s. (10 pts)
3. After presenting your experimental results (Ksp and s) for the different equilibrium systems
examined, Discuss the effects of common ions and increasing ionic strength on the solubility of
the Ca(OH)2 precipitate. Do they coincide with what was expected from theory? Explain. (15 pts)
4. What are the possible sources of errors and their effect on the calculated parameters? Rationalize (20 pts)

CALCULATIONS (35 pts)

Determine the:
1. Concentration (in molarity) of the standard HCl solution
2. Experimental Ksp and molar solubility, calculate the % error
3. Ksp and Solubility of Ca(OH)2 in the presence of CaCl2.
4. Solubilities of Ca(OH)2 in the presence of increasing concentration of KCl. Show also the calculation of
ionic strength for each KCl solution.
