The Agricultural Revolution
As changes were taking place in science, there were new
developments in farming (agriculture). These changes were
called the Agricultural Revolution. It sets the stage for the
Industrial Revolution.

The Enclosure Movement was a system of land division
used in Great Britain where they fenced off land for
individual use. Because of this system, farmers needed less
workers. People had to relocate (move) to the cities to find
work. This is also called rural to urban migration.
Oct 152:43 PM
Some advancements of the Agricultural Revolution are:
• Crop Rotation Keeps soil fertile and more crops can be
grown.
• Seed Drill plant rows of seeds versus scattering seeds.
• Better Breeding of Animals produces stronger, healthier,
larger animals for work and meat.

These changes in farming create conditions favorable for
industry. People move to the cities to work in factories and
the demand for manufactured goods increases.
Manufactured goods are items produced in a factory. The
making of items in factories is called industry. Changes in
agriculture lead to the Industrial Revolution.

The Industrial Revolution:
The Industrial Revolution is defined as a change in which
people began to rely on the use of machinery rather than
human or animal power.

The Industrial Revolution leads the world into a new age!
The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain in the textile,
or cloth industry. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, cloth had
been made in a Domestic System (or Cottage Industry), which
is a system where manufacturing is done in homes or
cottages by families. The Domestic System was not very
efficient and it could not meet the demands for cloth. New
inventions for producing textiles leads away from the
Domestic System and the Factory System is created!
ENGLAND TEXTILES
Oct 152:50 PM
One of the first inventions was a machine called the Flying
Shuttle. Another name for this machine is the Powered
Loom. It was a weaving device that made the manufacturing
of cloth quicker and easier. One of the next inventions was
the Spinning Jenny. This was a machine that made it
possible for one person to spin many threads at the same
time, also making the manufacturing of cloth quicker and
easier. Making Cloth by Hand

The Factory System Begins!
Using large machines to manufacture cloth required a large
building. The first factories were located near rivers because
water power was the first source of power used to run the
machines. People now had to travel to work every day. This
is how the Mill Towns sprang up around the factories.
Oct 152:54 PM
However, water power was still not fast enough to meet
the demands in the factory system. Eventually, a machine
is invented called the Steam Engine. The Steam Engine
will be able to power many machines at a quicker pace. It
replaces water power and makes it possible for factories
to be set up near raw materials instead of near rivers.

When the Cotton Gin is invented, the process
of producing cloth in factories becomes very
quick. Now factories can Mass Produce cloth.
Many workers will be needed to work the new
machines. The Cotton Gin is a machine that
cleans the seeds out of cotton faster than by
hand.
Oct 152:58 PM
Within the factory system, production had to be organized so
they could mass produce. Mass Production is when many
goods can be produced in a short amount of time. Some
inventions and new methods that are created so they can
MASS PRODUCE are:
• Interchangeable Parts made it so parts could fit more than
one item.
• Automation machines do most of the work or labor rather
than people.
• Assembly Line each worker adds a part of the product and
passes it on until the entire product is finished.

NOTES Industrial Revolution 2015.notebook October 31, 2016
The manufacturing of iron into steel was made easier and
cheaper by 2 methods in the 1800's: the Bessemer Process
and the OpenHearth Process.
The Bessemer Process was a way to remove impurities
from iron to make steel, which was harder and stronger. It
was patented in 1855.
The OpenHearth Process used a special kind of furnace to
make steel cheaper than the Bessemer Process. It was not
put in to production until the 1860's and it replaced the
Bessemer Process.

TRANSPORTATION:
Transportation had to improve to move raw materials and
the newly manufactured goods more quickly. Transportation
changes over time. First, they create roads that make travel
faster. Then they built canals in the rivers so they could use
barges. Eventually, railroads or locomotives were invented.
This becomes the fastest form of transportation for a long
time.
Oct 153:06 PM
The rails of the tracks for the trains will be made out of
steel. The first locomotive was called the Rocket. As a
result of the railroad, time zones will be established. The
Steam Engine will be used to power the locomotives and
the Steamboat, which allowed quick travel on the rivers and
seas. The Titanic was a Steamboat!

The Industrial Impact on Society
The Industrial Revolution brought many changes to
people's lives. The Middle Class increases in
number and grows very wealthy. The Middle Class is
made up of factory owners and investors. The
Middle Class will also gain political power. Example:
Males will gain the right to vote and represent in
Parliament.
Oct 153:20 PM
21
NOTES Industrial Revolution 2015.notebook October 31, 2016
Not only is a Middle Class created, but so is an
Industrial Working Class. This class is made up of
peasants who are no longer farming for a living and
are now working in the factories. The working class
has a very hard life.
Oct 153:23 PM
How was life hard for the working industrial class?
• worked 1216 hours a day, 6 days a week, for LOW wages
• fined or beaten if they did not work fast enough
• working conditions were difficult, dirty, and dangerous
machinery was unsafe and many were killed.
• no job security
• child had to work in the factories to help support their
families instead of attending school (Child Labor)

Urbanization
Urbanization is the growth of cities. Urbanization causes many
changes in people's lives. Since most people were living in cities
during the Industrial Revolution, there was overcrowding. Many
families had to live in one house or apartment. Often times, they lived
in unsanitary conditions. There were no sewage systems, so garbage
often floated in the streets and water was often polluted. As a result,
diseases and epidemics were common. For a long time, workers
could not form Labor Unions or vote, so there was nothing they could
do about their working and living conditions.
Oct 171:32 PM
However, reforms/changes do eventually take place for the
working industrial class! Some REFORMS that take place are:
• Schools, orphanages, and hospitals are started for the poor.
• Labor/Trade Unions were made legal.
• The workday was reduced to 10 hours.
• Sewer systems and better housing was required.
• Every room in housing had to have a window for ventilation and
escape if there was a fire.
• Housing received a pipedin water supply.
Over time, life does become better for the working industrial class!

Political Changes (government) caused by the Industrial
Revolution
Many factory workers turned to Socialism and Communism
because of unfair wages and factory conditions. They wanted the
government to control the factories so that pay would be equal.
(This was the idea of Karl Marx.) Some countries, like the US,
develop other ways to handle this problem, such as making
sanitation laws and minimum wage laws. Labor Unions were
created and made legal to help workers have a say in the
conditions of the factories and how much they worked.
