Strategies to Maximize Student Engagement March 3, 2010 Leigh Santy ELL Inst @ corsatiis Inside-Outside Circle When to use Use Inside-Outside Circle when you want students to have multiple opportunities to practice a type of language. This is also a great way to give less proficient students an opportunity to hear a language model before they produce language. How to use it Break the class info two groups. Group one forms an inside circle facing out. Group two forms the outside circle facing in. Students should be facing each other. Give partners a topic to discuss. After partners have discussed, have one circle rotate in the clockwise direction. Give partners a topic to discuss. If students need practice they can discuss the same topic with a new partner. If the group has a range of proficiencies, put ess proficient students in the inside circle. When partners share have the outside circle share first so that they can model for the inside circle. Example: © Explain how to make your favorite meal. © Compare and contrast two characters. Talking Chips ‘When to use itz Use talking chips when you would like every student to have multiple chances to speak, you ‘want students to practice participating in conversations, and you would like students to balance the conversation among students, How to use it: Each team member receives the same number of talking chips. Students use a talking chip each time they contribute to the conversation. Each student must use up their talking chips during the conversation. If a student uses all of their talking chips, they must listen to others as they share. Tell students the topic they will respond to using talking chips and the amount of time the group will be working on responses. Example © Describe the actions of students at school.
