Duties and Responsibilities as Department Head:


 Serve on the Dean’s leadership team. Work with Dean and department heads in the college to support
the development, implementation, and assessment of interdisciplinary initiatives within the college.
Advise the Dean and Associate Deans on budgetary, curricular, and assessment issues affecting the
department. Serve on college and university level committees representing the department and
college.
 Support the development and assessment of undergraduate and graduate curricula. Provide leadership
for curriculum development, in collaboration with faculty. Support ongoing assessment efforts of
majors and coursework. Pursue the possibility of new programs with appropriate constituencies.
Work with other faculty and department chairs to create and implement interdisciplinary programs.
 Provide oversight of departmental budget and course scheduling. Allocate university funds for
departmental and curricular purposes. Incorporate university, faculty, and student priorities in
course scheduling. Align faculty teaching resources and preferences with curriculum needs. Provide
professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
 Supervise faculty and staff. Provide faculty and staff support via appropriate training and professional
opportunities. Support faculty in their teaching, research, and service as they move towards
promotion and tenure. Administer annual faculty and staff evaluations. Oversee student assessment
of faculty teaching.
 Recruit and retain students. Oversee departmental marketing and recruitment efforts. Work with
university and college recruitment offices to encourage students to enroll in majors. Coordinate
advising for departmental majors. Analyze student course needs for timely progression to
graduation. Manage student concerns and complaints.
 Represent the department within the college, university, and with outside community. Maintain
departmental website. Develop strong relationships with personnel in advising, records &
registration, and student support services in support of student success. Work with

development/alumni board and grant office to raise external funds for support of students and
initiatives.
