UNIT – I
1 (a) Define Ohms law, KCL and KVL with examples.
(b) State and explain Thevenin’s theorem and maximum power transfer theorem.

2 Derive the mathematical relation between star – delta and delta – star transformation.
UNIT – II
3 With neat sketch, explain the constructional details of a DC machine.
OR
4 With neat diagram, explain the speed control of a DC motor by field control and armature control.
UNIT – III
5 Explain the working principle and operation of single phase transformer with constructional
details.
OR
6 Explain the working principle and operation of a 3-phase alternator with constructional details.

UNIT – I
7 Determine the currents i1, i2 and i3 and the Voltage V1 and V2 in the given network.

8 Determine the current through 3Ω resistor branch as shown in figure using: (i) Thevenin’s
theorem. (ii) Norton’s theorem.

UNIT – II
9 Draw and discuss external load characteristics of: (i) Shunt. (ii) Series. (iii) Compound DC
generators.
OR
10 Swinburne test gave the following results on a dc shunt motor: Supply voltage 500 V, no load
current 5 A, armature resistance 0.5 Ω and field resistance 250 Ω. Determine the efficiency of
the machine: (i) As a generator delivering 100 A at 500 V. (ii) As a motor having a line current of
100 A at 500 V. Neglect temperature rise during operation. Assume stray losses at 1% of output.
UNIT – III
11 Determine with neat diagram OC and SC tests. “OC test normally is conducted on the low
voltage side whereas the SC test is conducted on the voltage side. Give reasons what
information you gather from these two tests.

12 Explain why the rotor of an induction motor rotates in the same direction as the stator magnetic
field and why the speed of the motor is less than the synchronous speed
