WHAT A RELIEF…Mariners relievers have combined to hold opponents scoreless in 19.0 of their
last 23.0 innings pitched, dating back to 7th inning on Saturday vs. the Padres…overall, Mariners
relievers have a 2.08 ERA (8 ER, 34.2 IP) in 5 Cactus League games this spring…a pair of Mariners
have tallied 4 strikeouts in relief outings: Dan Altavilla (2.0 IP) and Justus Sheffield (2.0 IP).
NEW COACHES…the Mariners seven-man coaching staff features four new faces this season:
Pitching Coach Paul Davis (w/STL in ‘18), First Base/Infield Coach Perry Hill (w/MIA in ‘18), Hitting
Coach Tim Laker (w/ARI in ‘18) and Major League Field Coordinator Jared Sandberg (w/TB in
‘18)…three coaches return from last year’s staff: Bench Coach Manny Acta, Bullpen Coach Jim
Brower (was Assistant Coach in 2018) and Third Base Coach Chris Prieto (was First Base Coach in
2018)…two coaches from last year’s staff are in new roles this season: Director of Pitching Strategies
and Development Brian De Lunas (was Bullpen Coach in 2018) and Organizational Hitting Advisor
Edgar Martinez (was Hitting Coach in 2018).
T-MOBILE PARK…the Mariners and T-Mobile announced in December that the home field of
the Mariners will be known as T-Mobile Park for the next 25 years…the process of incorporating
T-Mobile branding assets throughout the ballpark will take place over the next several weeks…much
of the work is expected to be completed by Opening Day on March 28 when the Mariners host the
Boston Red Sox.
AROUND THE WORLD…in camp this spring, the Mariners have players from the United States
(50), Venezuela (5), the Dominican Republic (5), Japan (2), Colombia (2), Cuba, (1), Mexico (1) and
South Africa (1).
2019 JAPAN OPENING SERIES…the Mariners will open the 2019 regular season in Tokyo, Japan
on March 20-21 against the Oakland Athletics…the two-game 2019 Japan Opening Series at the
Tokyo Dome will be “road” games for the Mariners…the Mariners will travel from Arizona to Tokyo on
Thursday, March 14…the trip will begin with two exhibition games vs. Nippon Professional Baseball
teams on Sunday, March 17 and Monday, March 18…the Mariners will begin the regular season on
March 20 at 6:35 pm in Tokyo (2:35 am in Seattle) and will fly back to Seattle following the game on
March 21 (6:35 pm in Japan/2:35 am in Seattle)…this will mark the 5th time that the Major League
Baseball regular season has opened with a two-game series in Japan (last: 2012, SEA vs. OAK).
HEY DAVE, DID YOU KNOW…that two players in the Mariners Spring Training camp rank among
the top-8 active players in career batting average against the Cleveland Indians?…Ichiro Suzuki
