Detailed Lesson Plan in Teaching Reading

I. Objectives
At the end of the class, the students should be able to:
A. interpret and explain nonverbal reading materials;
B. relate the events in the reading text to real life situations;
C. discuss the relationship of creatures by using a food chain.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Nature and Science in Connection
B. Level: Fourth year
C. Reference: English Expressways IV: S.D. Publication
D. Materials: Visual aids (diagram, poem, drawings)
III. Learning Activities
Teacher Activity Student Activity
A. Class Routine

Good afternoon class! Good afternoon ma’am!

Kindly pick-up the pieces of paper under your chairs and make
sure that your surrounding is clean

Thank you, you may now take your seats.

B. Recall

Anyone from the class who can tell what had we discussed
last meeting?
Ma’am, we discussed about prefixes.
Okay, then what are prefixes?
Prefixes are affixes put at the beginning of a word.
Very good!

What are then some of the examples of prefix with their The prefix re- means again, some words with this prefix are:
corresponding meaning and examples? retell, rewind, regain.

Good, another example. Ma’am, the prefix im- means not, examples of words which
have this prefix are: immortal, immoral, and immeasurable.
Thank you, those are indeed good examples.

What does the prefix eco means? This pertains to the environment.

Now fill the diagram with words having the prefix “eco-.”

Eco-warriors, eco-friendly, eco-like, eco-feminism,

ecotourism, ecotype, ecofreak, ecology.

C. Motivation Eldest of things, great Earth, I sing to thee!

All shapes that have all their dwelling in the sea.
Talking about environment, let us now read the poem All things that fly, or on the ground divine
entitled, “Hymn to Earth the Mother of all Momeric Hymn.” Live, move, and these are nourished—these are thine;
These from they wealth thou dost sustain,
Fair babes are born, and fruits on every tree
Hang ripe and large, revered Divinity.

The poem is about the different creatures in the Earth

What was the poem all about?
Very good! The poem is all about the interaction of the creatures in the
environment.
Do you agree that we interact with the creatures around us?
Yes
In what way?
We depend in our environment for our survival; we kill
animals to make food, we also plant, and in exchange of the
carbon dioxide that our body excrete comes oxygen from the
plants.

D. Lesson Proper

1. Pre activity:
Class, we are going to read a text entitled the Scope of
Ecology. While reading the text you will encounter a single
question per paragraph. Before answering the question, we
categorize the questions

Kindly read the different categorization of questions. Right there, think and search, on your own, and author and
you.
Read the example
Animals and plants cannot live it total isolation; in order to
survive, one must defend to the other. Animals for example
depend on plants for the source of air they breathe, and in
return plants depend on animals for carbon dioxide.

Question: What relationship occurs between the plants and

animals according to the paragraph?
_____________________________
Think and search
What now is the type of question presented? Because the answer for the question cannot be directly found
Why? in the paragraph.
Mutualism
Very good, now, the answer.

2. Activity Proper:
Now, read and answer the questions in the article that you
are going to read.
Right there
For number 1, what is your answer?
Animals and plants may be affected directly or indirectly in
countless different ways by other plants and animals around
it.

Very good!
Right there, and the answer is there is intense competition
For number 2? going on for water, nutrient salts, and above all, for light.

Good! On your own; as part of the ecology we must be disciplined

enough to avoid destruction in the environment to maintain
For the last item, anyone? the balance among plants and animals.

You seem to understand the text very well!

In our science class ma’am.
3. Post Activity

Let us further discuss the article by using a food chain. When

do you often see this diagram?
This diagram also shows what happens to other creatures if
one of those does something.

The arrows on the diagram shows what consumes a creature

and what creature consumed it.
Yes, because taking the bird for example, when it consumes
the worm the number of worms decreased while the no. of
That’s right!
birds ad a chance to increase by continuously feeding on it.
This chart shows the relationship of animals in terms of
getting food. What else do you think?
Yes, In here there is a continuous competition for nutrients,
because in order to survive one creature must feed on to the
OK
other. The snake eats the bird, in effect the organisms giving
off carbon dioxide decreases.
Do you agree to the answer for the first question? Could you
explain it using the food chain posted here on the board?

That’s a good idea. For number two, anyone?

I have learned that through the food chain we can explain the
relationship occurring in our ecology with regards to food
getting. Another thing is that creature tends to increase and
decrease in number depending on what they consume and
what consumes them. Also, I made a realization that as
humans we must act according to our nature to avoid
imbalance in the ecology.
4. Generalization

Now, what did you learn from our today’s discussion?

Very good!

5. Evaluation
1. What relationship occurs between plants and animals?
a. mutualism b. commensalism c. predation

IV. Agreement
Teacher Activity Student Activity
Class, read your assignment On a one whole sheet of paper, write a five-paragraph essay
entitled, “I as Part of the Nature.” Focus on what humans can
do to maintain balance in the ecology.
