Dear Parents
Sixth Form Music Visit to Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club

As you may know, the syllabus for the study of Music in the Sixth Form includes a
knowledge of Jazz, with three of the six set works for AS level being Jazz performances.

So far as humanly possible, I seek to give our students the experience of hearing and seeing
live the kinds of music they are required to study in the classroom. Only then do the
different styles take on reality for them; hence our visit to see Wagner’s Die Walkűre at the
very end of last term.

You may know that Ronnie Scott’s in London is widely regarded as one of the leading jazz
clubs internationally, and I am arranging a visit there on Tuesday October 5th.

We plan to gather at Colchester station in time for the 17.03 train to London Liverpool
Street, and to be back again at Colchester station a minute or two before midnight. The cost
of the trip, excluding train fare, is £25.50 per student, payable as a voluntary contribution.
Whilst there is no obligation to attend or to pay, the trip is unlikely to go ahead unless all
costs are covered by voluntary contributions. Students will need to pay their own train fare
in addition, but if we have a large enough group we may be able to get a group ticket at less
than the usual cost of an evening fare to London.

If your son or daughter wishes to order a soft drink or a meal at Ronnie Scott’s, they will
have to have money with them for that. Full details of what food and drink is available at
Ronnie Scott’s can be found on the Ronnie Scott’s website.

Year 12 students will be starting to study their Jazz set works shortly. For Year 13, the study
of Jazz is in the past, but I would still commend this visit to them out of general interest and
because it will further illuminate the things they learned about this style of music during last
academic year.

If you would like your son/daughter to take part in this trip, please complete and return to
Reception the attached consent form, along with a cheque payable to Colchester Royal
Grammar School.

If you have any questions about the proposed visit, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely
