The story of a
newspaper
By Megha Vaani

When I was a kid, Sundays were my favorite. Not only

because it was a weekend, but it was the day my
favourite newspaper would be delivered to our doorstep.
Every Sunday morning, I would be the first to take the
newspaper in and sit to read. I would read every section
in it; the business page, local news, international news,
education, comics, horoscopes, etc. Yes, it would take
me hours to complete reading as I was not a very fast
reader back then. My mother would persistently try
getting me out of my seat to have our routine Sunday
breakfast as a family.

That’s how my love for reading started. It started with a

newspaper. Every section of the newspaper gave me
lots of information and changed my views, while

The Boom in Animal Cruelty

By Jessica Jacob
Every day we hear about animal cruelty. It could happen to pets and strays. Recently, many
cases went viral in the news and on the Internet.

Last month, Mr Amarjit, 56, and his wife, 52, found a mother dog and her five puppies poisoned
while three others had their legs and bodies chopped at a housing project in Selangor. The
couple was shocked by this cruelty and hopes the DVS (Department of Veterinary Services) will
investigate on this matter under the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

Do you remember the incident of a man dumping a cat into a washing machine at a launderette
last year? According to the Animal Welfare Act, ‘Those found guilty of abusing animals can be
fined between RM20k to RM100 or jailed up to 3 years or both’. There is always a
solution to every problem. Government is urging us to report animal cruelty. Should you need
to report animal abuse, contact the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Malaysia at 03-
88702000.

Supermoon in Malaysia
By Jessica Jacob
Moon is known as the fifth largest natural satellite in the
Solar System. Moon is the one and only permanent
natural satellite too. Are you aware of the Super Moon
phenomena that recently happened in Malaysia?

The super moon phenomena happens when the full moon

takes place closest to the Earth, its perigee. During that
time, the moon will appear larger and brighter in the sky.
According to the National Space Agency (Angkasa), this
occurs when the Moon’s position is at a distance of
356,761km from us. We can see this with our naked eye.

This year, the Super Moon can be seen three times. The first time was on January 21, then on
February 19 and the third one is expected to appear on March 21. It is said that this is a common
occurrence because the Moon keeps moving around Earth’s orbit throughout the year.
Don’t miss out the next Super Moon in March. It will be bigger, brighter and clearer than usual. This is a
must-see phenomenon!

Looking for a Dog? Let’s Adopt!

By Radhika Divya

With the number of pet shops rising, Malaysians are

spoilt for choice when looking for a new dog. It is
easier to get foreign dog breeds with the popular
choices of German Shepherd, Husky and even Corgis
available. Getting a new pet is always exciting and
most children eagerly look forward to it. However,
buying may not always be the best option.

Each year, approximately 1.5 million stray dogs and

cats are euthanized in the US. In 2017, 935 dogs and
cats were rescued by SPCA Malaysia. These animals
are usually abandoned or stray and do not receive any
care. SPCA Malaysia welcomes these animals, cares Image Source: secondchancenc.org
for them and finds them new homes.

Unfortunately, SPCA cannot take in all the stray animals as it does not have space available.
These animal shelters depend on donations to operate. They also welcome volunteers to
clean the kennels, serve meals and play with the animals. This is a great way for you to get
familiar with pets.

SPCA Malaysia is always looking to find their animals a new home. This way, they can take
in many more stray and abandoned animals. By adopting a dog, you are giving the chance to
save another dog’s life. Pet adoption is simple and much cheaper than buying a new pet.
Most importantly, you are playing your part to rescue the abandoned and stray dogs in
Malaysia. If you are interested to find out more, visit SPCA Selangor. They are open to the
public every day from 10:00AM to 4:00PM except Monday. All volunteers under the age of 11
years old must be accompanied by a parent, teacher or guardian above 18 years of age. For
further information, visit their website at https://www.spca.org.my

Sharing the Love for Animals

By Vatsy

How do we go about loving animals? Do you have a favourite animal at home? Be it a puppy
or cat or a two-legged bird or even the legless snake, all of them are earth’s inhabitants - just
like you and me. Animals are beautiful creatures, which is why we love Mickey Mouse Club
House or Peppa Pig, don’t we? However, have you explored how you can play a role to love
and care for them? Here are some tips for you to explore:

1. Help with Pet Chores

Whether the pet in question is Pluto from the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or a minion, or
anything in between, caring for your pets has a magical impact. Have you tried pet sitting for
a day? Maybe you should give it a try! Tell mommy that you are going to be fine under her
assistance and supervision. It’s time to get hands-on. Whenever you are caring for a pet,
notice a few important details:
• What are the pet's basic needs?
• How do they communicate their emotions to you?
• How are they different from us and how are they the same?

2. Pretend Play
Well, obviously we can’t bring an elephant back home from the zoo although we want to.
However, here’s something you can try instead:
• Care for Your Stuffies: Ask mommy to teach you all about pet care with the power of
make-believe and a well-loved stuffed animal. Don't forget to include a visit to the vet. Tell
mommy about how your "pet" is feeling and what their needs are.
• Visit a Virtual Zoo: Pack up your dolls and take a tour of your living room or the garden as
a would-be zoo. Have small sections for pet feeding and animal petting. You may print out
some large pictures with some description of the animal to tell a story at each stop.

You don't have to own a pet to be enthralled by
the animal kingdom. Explore pet-sitting, walk
along the park in your neighbourhood, go to the
animal sanctuary, go hiking, go to the zoo and
just anywhere that you can catch a glimpse of an
animal.

6. Read Together
I know we are naturally fascinated by and drawn to animals. Let's encourage this natural
instinct and empower our friends to share kindness with and on behalf of the animal kingdom.
Have you read the Marley & Me or Hachiko book? Grab one off the store right away and spare
a tissue box along the way. It’s okay to cry, we all have emotions and so do these animals.

See you again next time with another great topic to share.

Love,
Vatsy

Did You Know?

The Malaysian Dog

The Telomian, also known as the ‘kampung dog’ is a rare breed originated from Malaysia. It
has topped the world list of ‘20 rarest dogs’.

The Telomian was named after the Telom River in Pahang by anthropologist Dr. Orville Elliot
in 1963. This type of dog is usually kept by the indigenous people in Malaysia as watchdogs,
hunters or shepherds. This canine helps to keep dangerous animals such as snakes away.
Interestingly, these dogs hardly bark but they growl and howl instead.

The Telomian are known to be naturally alert and obedient. They also have very good control of
their paws and use them to hold things. These dogs are usually 15 to 18 inches tall and weigh
about 20 kg. They can live up to 14 years. This breed is the only type bred outside of Malaysia.
