This lick starts out with a scale walk up from the 3rd to the 5th into an E major
descending arpeggio followed by a B major descending arpeggio. These arpeggios
are both played against the E major chord, so the F# and D# of the B arpeggio function
as the 9th and major 7th over the E root. The following line is uses some chromaticism
leading into a C# augmented arpeggio line (F-A-C#) against the C# minor chord.
Although this mixture of augmented and minor sounds “outside”, the tension pushes the
line to F# minor (it creates a V-i resolution).
I descend and return through an F#m9 arpeggio in bar 4. On the last two notes of
that bar, I’m moving the same shape down a 1/2 step to outline the 3rd and #5th of
the following B7 altered chord. The line ends with a chromatic run leading into B
Superlocrian (B C D Eb F G A) before resolving to the E major (E F# G# A B C# D#).
