What do the following statements mean? Do you agree with them? What
are the implications for how we teach receptive skills in class?

1. Reading and listening involve more than understanding words and structures.

2. We often read/listen mainly to confirm what we expect to see/hear.

3. We comprehend best what has interest or relevance to us.

4. In a real context, word-by-word reading and listening is comparatively rare.

5. Unless we know why we are reading/listening, we do not know how to read/listen.
