UNIT TITLE Minoan Inspired Coil Pots
GRADE LEVEL 3rd Grade
DURATION 55 Minutes, 5 days

SAMPLE

Students have been working with different types of paint and learning a lot about themselves
RATIONALE through their art. Students will now work more with their hands and learn about other cultures
and how to create 3D forms of art.
Learning about different cultures is important for students because they will encounter different
ones in their life and to know even a little bout them can make them more comfortable and
confident around others and understand them more. Student will start off by learning about
functional/decorative ceramics and about the Minoan culture and their design work. Students

will them learn how to work with and manipulate clay with coils and start building a strong base.
They will them learn about a few different designs they could incorporate and play around with
to make their pots creative. Last, they will add decorations to the outside of the coils and after
its fired glaze their pots with a one or two colors.

Lesson 1:
Students will learn about the Minoan culture and answer questions and engage in discussion
about pottery.
Lesson 2:
OBJECTIVE(S) Students will demonstrate skills using art techniques to create a coil pot using different coil
designs.
Lesson 3:
Students will complete a self-assessment to give themselves quality feedback on what they
learned.
Vocabulary
Coil Pot: a method of creating pottery using coils in which things can be made thicker or taller
vessels.
ACADEMIC
Minoan Culture: Ancient Greeks from the Island of Crete known for their trade especially
LANGUAGE
ceramics.
Functional: a construct allowing an object to use for a purpose.
Decorative: an element of designing or to be used as decoration, not functional.
RESOURCES
MATERIALS Clay, craft knifes, cups of water, modelling tools, needle tools, cutting wire, forks, rags, glazes
EQUIPMENT
Student will complete a reflection sheet in which they will create explain what they learned
ASSESSMENT
about the Minoan culture and their strengths and weaknesses from building the pot.
