Hi Viren,

At this stage we can schedule your surgery any Wednesday in March, as

you are travelling interstate it is preferable to admit you to the hospital on
Tuesday (the afternoon before your surgery).
Let me know what date in March suits you.
Th team recommend you continue to eat red meat which is beneficial for
your bone density. No weight loss is required.

It was nice meeting you on 13/09/18 regarding my leg lengthening

surgery.
I have received estimate of fees and now would like to make a booking
for the big day/surgery.
I prefer to get a date by end of march 2019. I also would like to know if i
need to prepare in any way
before surgery ? i.e. like diet or weight gain or loss etc.

Thanks

Kind Regards

Good morning Viren Email received on 20/02/17

Thank you for your email below.

I would suggest that you consult with Dr Ling Lan at the Prince Charles
Hospital in Chermside. Dr Ling Lan has spoken at our World Polio Day a
few years ago. You just need to get a referral from your GP and have
them send it to the hospital and an appointment will be made for you.

In the meantime our Spinal Allied Health Team can assist with a modified
cushion for you. If you would like to contact Leanne Morley on 3435 3124
and arrange for a consultation with one of the team.

director@post-polio.org Email receive on 22/02/17 :
Physician 1: Correcting the difference in bulk of the two buttocks is a
reasonable approach to decrease stress on the back and improve postural
alignment. I have not heard of any polio survivor doing this
procedure. One of my patients was trying to get an orthotist to make a
wearable pad to make up for the smaller buttock volume but i don’t think
they ever solved the problem of how to keep it in the correct location
after sitting, standing, walking, etc. instead of sliding around. There are
some girdle type garments sold in lingerie magazines that increase the
size of both buttocks—I don’t know how easy it would be remove the
padding on just one side.

Physician 2: It is a reasonable option as long as the surgeon is good and

understands polio. I have had 1 patient who had this done and was happy
with the result. I often recommend the small cushion under the polio
affected limb when there is gluteal muscle involvement to reduce stress
on the spine.

Physician 3: While I have not heard of someone doing this procedure,

it does make sense. Most of us would recommend the "prosthetic"
solution, which is to use a custom made padded cushion built up on
the small size rather than undergo the risks of a surgical procedure. It
is important to have a 'level base' of the pelvis when sitting in order to
keep the spine relatively straight. Nevertheless, the body can tolerate
not having things perfect all of the time, so a leveling cushion can be
just as effective as a surgical procedure for this goal; albeit at the cost
of some inconvenience of taking a cushion with you when moving
about & traveling.
Does this help? Where do you live?
