CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction
As time passes by, technology is continuously developing. The technology is upgrading
itself into a useful way that makes our life efficient and easier. Every year the professionals were
able to innovate and investigate machines and devices that will help us in our daily living. In this
way technology has a huge benefit to the citizens in the community. The continuously improving
machine leads it’s way to develop the radio frequency identification. According to Techopedia, a
radio frequency identification reader (RFID reader) is a device used to gather information from
an RFID tag, which is used to track individual objects. Radio waves are used to transfer data
from the tag to a reader. RFID is a technology similar in theory to bar codes. However, the RFID
tag does not have to be scanned directly, nor does it require line-of-sight to a reader. The RFID
tag it must be within the range of an RFID reader, which ranges from 3 to 300 feet, in order to be
read.

RFID technology allows several items to be quickly scanned and enables fast
identification of a particular product, even when it is surrounded by several other items. RFID
tags have not replaced bar codes because of their cost and the need to individually identify every
item. An RFID system consists of three components: a scanning antenna and transceiver (often
combined into one reader, also known as an interrogator) and a transponder, the RFID tag. An
RFID tag consists of a microchip, memory and antenna. The RFID reader is a network-connected
device that can be permanently attached or portable. It uses radio frequency waves to transmit
signals that activate the tag. Once activated, the tag sends a wave back to the antenna, where it is
translated into data.

Most educational institutions' administrators are concerned about student irregular

attendance. Truancies can affect student overall academic performance. The conventional
method of attendance tracking by calling names or signing on paper is very time consuming and
insecure, hence inefficient. Our new Time and attendance that also called rfid attendance system
using Biometric attendance machine and fingerprint reader, is one of the solutions to address this
problem. This system can be used to take attendance for student in school, college, and
2

university. It also used to take attendance for Teacher, Staff and other Employee. Its ability to
uniquely identify each person based on their RFID tag type of ID card make the process of
taking the attendance easier, faster and secure as compared to conventional method. Students
only need to place their ID card on the reader and their attendance will be taken immediately.
With real time clock capability of the system, attendance taken will be more accurate since the
time for the attendance taken will be recorded. The system will be connected to the Secured VPN
Server through LAN Cable. Our online based school management software help you to view
Attendance report from anywhere, in any device (Mobile, Laptop, Tab). The Automated
Attendance system also sends an instant SMS to the parents/ guardian that the student has
reached school or is leaving school or even if the child has not reported.

It’s generally said that the roots of radio frequency identification technology can be
traced back to World War II. The Germans, Japanese, Americans and British were all using
radar—which had been discovered in 1935 by Scottish physicist Sir Robert Alexander Watson-
Watt—to warn of approaching planes while they were still miles away. The problem was there
was no way to identify which planes belonged to the enemy and which were a country’s own
pilots returning from a mission. The Germans discovered that if pilots rolled their planes as they
returned to base, it would change the radio signal reflected back. This crude method alerted the
radar crew on the ground that these were German planes and not Allied aircraft (this is,
essentially, the first passive RFID system). Under Watson-Watt, who headed a secret project,
the British developed the first active identify friend or foe (IFF) system. They put a transmitter
on each British plane. When it received signals from radar stations on the ground, it began
broadcasting a signal back that identified the aircraft as friendly. RFID works on this same basic
concept. A signal is sent to a transponder, which wakes up and either reflects back a signal
(passive system) or broadcasts a signal (active system). Advances in radar and RF
communications systems continued through the 1950s and 1960s. Scientists and academics in the
United States, Europe and Japan did research and presented papers explaining how RF energy
could be used to identify objects remotely. Companies began commercializing anti-theft systems
that used radio waves to determine whether an item had been paid for or not. Electronic article
surveillance tags, which are still used in packaging today, have a 1-bit tag. The bit is either on or
off. If someone pays for the item, the bit is turned off, and a person can leave the store. But if the
person doesn't pay and tries to walk out of the store, readers at the door detect the tag and sound
3

an alarm. Mario W. Cardullo claims to have received the first U.S. patent for an active RFID
tag with rewritable memory on January 23, 1973. That same year, Charles Walton, a California
entrepreneur, received a patent for a passive transponder used to unlock a door without a key. A
card with an embedded transponder communicated a signal to a reader near the door. When
the reader detected a valid identity number stored within the RFID tag, the reader unlocked the
door. Walton licensed the technology to Schlage, a lock maker, and other companies. The U.S.
government was also working on RFID systems. In the 1970s, Los Alamos National Laboratory
was asked by the Energy Department to develop a system for tracking nuclear materials. A group
of scientists came up with the concept of putting a transponder in a truck and readers at the gates
of secure facilities. The gate antenna would wake up the transponder in the truck, which would
respond with an ID and potentially other data, such as the driver's ID. This system was
commercialized in the mid-1980s when the Los Alamos scientists who worked on the project left
to form a company to develop automated toll payment systems. These systems have become
widely used on roads, bridges and tunnels around the world. At the request of the Agricultural
Department, Los Alamos also developed a passive RFID tag to track cows. The problem was that
cows were being given hormones and medicines when they were ill. But it was hard to make sure
each cow got the right dosage and wasn't given two doses accidentally. Los Alamos came up
with a passive RFID system that used UHF radio waves. The device drew energy from
the reader and simply reflected back a modulated signal to the reader using a technique known
as backscatter. Later, comanies developed a low-frequency (125 kHz) system, featuring smaller
transponders. A transponder encapsulated in glass could be injected under the cows skin. This
system is still used in cows around the world today. Low-frequency transponders were also put
in cards and used to control the access to buildings.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

According to Go My School (2015), there are some of the major benefits Attendance system and
online based school management software

To Management

It will add value to the school’s image by showing the parents that you care for the security of
their children. It will also reduce irregularities and bunks of the students. The system will help
the authority to simplify the whole administration work, save resources and time.

To students/Parents

Thousands of students go missing from school in India every year. In nearly all these
cases, the student did not report to school, or left school in time to not return home and we never
knew of this until it was very late. If the parents or the school authorities could have known in
time that the untoward delay/ absence of reporting is unnatural, we could have stopped the
tragedy. In our RFID attendance system the Parents will get the notification SMS at least twice
in a day so they can relax and concentrate on their work. The Digital Attendance system fully
configured for Child Safety and tracking Purpose.

According to Digital Technologies (2018), Students don’t have to stop in queue, to slide
card one by one. The system automatically records all attendance information. Builds a unique
user-friendly messaging system, Teachers and parents can communicate conveniently There is
no worry for parents about his/her school going child. Laconic Student Guard takes care of your
children, it sends an automatic sms while your child reaching in / exit from school. How It
Works- Each student wears our provided sophisticated RFID Card with unique ID when he/she

central server internally for security point of view.

Related Studies

According to the study of Olanipekun and Boyinbode (2015), The design and
implementation of a RFID based automatic attendance system in Nigeria has already
implemented. This system provides an effective and more convenient method of taking
attendance when compared to the manual system. Data are more organized, the system is user
friendly, data manipulation and retrieval is done via the graphical interface. The system can be
implemented in any educational institution in Nigeria. It has been implemented in Federal
University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria.

As a result of the challenges of the manual method of taking attendance in schools and
colleges in Nigeria, an automated attendance system needs to be adopted. The challenges include
difficulty in keeping the attendance list over a long period of time, unnecessary time wastage
during writing or signing, improper documentation, students forgetting to write or sign the
attendance paper, lecturers forgetting the attendance list in the classroom, students writing or
signing illegally for an absentee among others. This paper implements Radio frequency
identification (RFID) automatic attendance system in Nigeria educational institutions which
provides the functionalities of registering students, recording attendance, making decision on the
eligibility of a student to sit for an examination in a course and other functions. This work
eradicates the deficiencies associated with the manual attendance system with an automated
approach implemented through Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The case
study is Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria.
11

According the students of Dela Salle University Department of Electronics and

Communication Engineer (2015), The ETC-RFID proposed in this study promises a cost-
effective yet efficient toll system. The optimum angle of placement of the reader mounted at the
middle top of the tollgate is found to be 450 at a speed of 80 kph. It is possible that a higher
speed can be obtained but due to time constraints, only up to 80 kph was tested. The speeds used
to test the accuracy of detection of the reader were 20 kph, 30kph, 40 kph, 50kph, 60kph, 70 kph,
and 80 kph. A passive tag of class EPC2 is used in this study. The range of detection is also
measured to be 2 meters from the arc where the reader is mounted. This allows the removal of
barrier which is present in the current toll system. The database operates accurately. It has also
been observed that RFID tags encapsulated in plastic cards are hard to detect, hence raw tags
were used instead. It is recommended to develop the appropriate encapsulation material for the
RFID. It is further recommended that the following features be added: postpaid billing system,
more robust information security, and more interactive GSM program. The interactive GSM
program shall allow the system to know if the cellphone registered has received the notification
message, if not, a report is generated and the message is sent to another contact like an email.
The customer may also change his contact through the SMS he receives.

Conclusion

After the data gathering procedure and statistical treatment of data that was conducted by
the researchers, they conclude that having radio frequency identification as student attendance
monitory has positive effects in Asian Institute of Computer Studies. It will be helpful in such
different ways including student and parent relationship, student’s attitude, convenient to
professors in the institution towards monitoring their handled students and the enhancement of
the security in Asian Institute of Computer Studies.

Radio frequency identification as student attendance monitory in Asian Institute of

Computer Studies is very helpful because of it’s automatic and convenient service to the school
personnel, student and parents. According to the study, out of 100 respondents, 63 (63%) of the
students are aware of the Student Attendance Monitoring using Radio Frequency Identification.
It shows that the Senior High School Students of Asian Institute of Computer Studies are not
totally updated of the improvement of technology in our society. The researchers believe that we
must develop or improve our equipment not just only the computer itself but as well as adding
devices that may help the AICS Community.

Since Asian Institute of Computer Studies is a computer school, 83 (83%) of the students
are in favor of having an automatic and convenient student attendance monitory. The Senior
High School Students wants to have development in the institution. Out of 100 respondents, 82
(82%) of the students believes that this device is convenient and user friendly to Asian Institute
of Computer Studies. There are high percentage of scale of the students who believes and trusts
to the purpose and function of this device that may affect in the school, students and facilitators.

One of the benefits of having radio frequency identification is the developing student’s
discipline. According to the study, the device will help to lessen the inappropriate activities done
by the students during class hour including cutting their classes and coming late in school.
Secondly, the radio frequency identification as student attendance monitory will not just help the
students but also the teacher in facilitating their students. It will be helpful in a way of preserving
time in class hours. In the past few years until now, manual getting of each student’s attendance
is very time consuming.
28

According to the study, 57 (57%) of the students are agree that Student Attendance
Monitoring using Radio Frequency Identification will help to lessen the cases of students who
cuts their classes in Asian Institute of Computer Studies, 35 (35%) of the students are strongly
agree, and 8 (8%) are disagree. This means that there are still huge percentage of students who
believe that this device will help to develop the student and parent relationship. Updating by
means of sending text messages to the parents or guardian is a good way of monitoring their
child’s performance in school. In this way, the guardian may discipline their child when they’re
doing inappropriate activities that may affect their class performance. Lastly, the researchers
conclude that Asian Institute of Computer Studies is also one of the beneficiary of having radio
frequency identification as a student attendance monitory. It is also a way of enhancing the
security because in some cases when accident happen, the school are not aware of the time in and
out of the student.

Recommendation

With all the data presented, the researchers recommend the following:

 For the students, the students must be responsible and well discipline in attending their

classes.

 For the parents, with or without the radio frequency as student monitory attendance, they

must always monitor their child when attending classes.

 For the schools, the researchers advise the school to adopt the student attendance monitory

using radio frequency in Asian Institute of Computer Studies because of the benefits that it

could offer to the following personalities including students, parents, professors and school.

 For the future researcher, the ideas presented may be used as reference data in conducting

new researchers or in testing the validity of other related findings. The researchers will

advices this studies will also serve as their cross-reference that will give them background or

an overview of the student attendance monitory using radio frequency identification.
