Math Honors Assignment
A. 6 B. 9 C. 15 D. 18
In this problem, I’m being asked to solve for C if x=6 in the equation C = ax² + bx.
Correct Solution:
1 = 4a + 2b 1 = 4(½) +2b C = ½ x² - ½ x
3 = 9a + 3b
C = ½ (6²) - ½ (6)
1 = 2 + 2b
-3 (1 = 4a + 2b) -2 -2 C = 18 - 3
2 (3 = 9a + 3b)
-1 = 2b C = 15
-3 = -12a - 6b 2
6 = 18a + 6b
-½ = b
3 = 6a
6
a=½
This problem was tricky because there was much substituting involved before solving for
the variables and I could’ve easily made a mistake in the new equations, which would have
messed up the elimination process to solve for a, b, and C.
