STANDARD LESSON PLAN FORMAT


I. Describe the Class

5th grade classroom, 25 students, 2 with LD, 2 ELL.


Mixed ability grouping

II. Objective(s)

Be able to complete the experiment given by the end of the time limit and
explain what happened as a group.

III. Procedures

Students will be given an experiment dealing with surface tension, gravity,


and creativity. With the materials given, the group of students will need to
figure out how to make a paperclip float in a cup of water. They will be given
a few items to help them do it, but as a group, they must figure out how to
have the paper clip float and it be the only thing on the top of the water. The
students will be given no other context than that as they are to discuss as a
group what to do.

Cooperative Learning Strategies Used: Group goals, group heterogeneity, interpersonal


skills, and promotive interaction.

Plastic cups
Paper clips
Paper
Paper towels
Plastic forks
Wooden sticks/toothpicks

V. Grouping Structures

LD and ELL students to be placed in different groups.

VII. Assessment

First, find out which groups were able to complete the task. Then have a class
discussion on water tension and why the paper clip would float (or not) in the cup
of water.
