Looking after my baby.

20 June 2018. Written by T Liz

Asalamo Alaikom and Kia Ora Bayan. It is lovely to have you back at preschool after your break. You
have quickly settled back into preschool, and you are enjoying playing with your friends and your
sister in the Nursery. Today Teacher Farah put you in the baby swing outside. You reminded her to
put the ‘seat belt’ on to keep you safe in the swing. Teacher Farah smiled as she did the seat belt up
for you.

Later Mummy brought your baby sister Mariam in to meet the teachers. She was giving her a cuddle
as she talked to the teachers and you noticed Baby Mariam’s car seat was empty. You found a doll
and put her in the baby’s car seat. You worked a long time to make sure the baby was safe in the
car seat. “Seat belt” you told Teacher Farah when she asked what you were doing with the baby.

“That’s very wise Bayan” Teacher Farah replied.

What Learning Occurred?

Bayan’s new learning pathway for this term is learning to use more words to communicate. She is
repeating a phrase she has previously heard which is increasing her memory capacity. Bayan is using
her clear verbal communication skills to express her ideas. She is using her words to describe her
actions. Ka nui ake tō mātauranga (your knowledge increases) Bayan!

How can we extend this learning?

We can support Bayan as she continues to verbally express her ideas by asking her about her play,
and inviting her responses.
