1 Design values of actions

Annex A2 of BS EN 1990 covers the application to bridges. In this annex three tables
of design values for different sets of actions are given as below:

 Table A2.4(A) – Design values of actions (EQU) (Set A)

 Table A2.4(B) – Design values of actions (STR/GEO) (Set B)
 Table A2.4(C) – Design values of actions (STR/GEO) (Set C)

These tables provide the γ partial factors for different actions. The terms EQU, STR
and GEO refer to different ULS limit state verification cases and are defined in BS EN
1990 cl. 6.4.1 (1):

“EQU: Loss of static equilibrium of the structure or any part of the structure or any part
of it considered as a rigid body, where:

 Minor variations in the value or the spatial distribution of actions from a single
source are significant, and
 The strengths of the construction materials or ground are generally not governing.
