Brief Description of the Company

The Benguet Electric Cooperative, Inc., BENECO, is one of the Energy Regulatory
Commission assigned by the government of the Philippines to the area of Benguet, similar to
MERALCO of Manila. BENECO is very crucial in economic development in Baguio City and
Benguet. They have been distributing electricity in the province of Benguet since October 5, 1973
and has been granted by National Electrification Commission 50 years to operate for the whole
city of Baguio and Benguet.

What happened during the tour?

On arrive at BENECO, we were amazed by such scenery. It was a company hidden in the
woods. BENECO is one of the biggest companies that we visited when we had our plant visit in
Baguio City. BENECO’s representative warmly welcomed us, since there was also an event being
held that day, we had our seminar in one of the conference hall will a long elliptical table with
fancy chairs. They discussed the history, milestone and program outline used by their company.

What did you learn during the visit?

Similar to Manila and MERALCO, Benguet has BENECO. BENECO covers the whole
province of Benguet with 13 municipalities providing them electrical energy. BENECO is the
counterpart in Benguet, they are the distributor of electricity to the area they cover. The The mode
of their transmission is through Fiber Optics and they also use Wireless transmission for
redundancy. During the seminar, there were a total of 4 speakers. The speakers were direct to the
point that it made us more interested and hooked with the topics they were discussing. We learned
about the Software Application System Network and its System of Operations. Also, BENECO
had a lot of struggles before being achieving what it has today.

Brief Description of the Company

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration
(PAG-ASA) BAGUIO Station is where observation of meteorological elements such as weather
and climate are made at fixed scheduled times and are transmitted to the central office to update
the system and update the people within that specific location.

What happened during the tour?

We scheduled our tour in PAG-ASA intending to witness the release of the weather
balloon, unfortunately we were not early enough. The balloon was just released minutes ago before
we arrived. The staffs and the Head of their branch there in PAG-ASA Baguio welcomed us
warmly and the head of the branch discussed everything pretty well.

What did you learn during the visit?

I have learned a lot of things during the visit and was also able to see a lot of different equipment
used for weather forecasting. The Head of the branch explained the function of each instrument
and equipment and how it helps them there in Baguio. According to the speaker most of the
instrument on the station are outdated. Weather forecasting is quite a difficult job and one thing
that makes it convenient and accurate at the same time is having updated equipment. It had me
thinking that regardless of Baguio being a province, it doesn’t need updates on instruments instead
it must be in fact Baguio is the summer capital of the Philippines. It would be better if the
government would be able to fund additional updated instrument.

Aside from that I also learned that every release of the weather hot air balloon costs a lot. More
than thousands and every day, at least 1 balloon is being released into the sky. Weather forecasting
may be a small and trivial matter for some people but it cost a lot more than it sounds like. Imagine
spending millions just to officially state that today will be a sunny and humid day. But of course
weather forecasting is very important especially on storms and unexpected weather. It gives
people ample time to prepare for the coming occurrence. We also learned that after the branch

there in Baguio receives the data it is being relayed to the central office to update their system as
well as the people in that specific place. I have learned that though they lack some equipment and
some of their equipment and instruments are outdated they play a vital role to inform the people
there in Baguio with regards to the weather and climate which will help them to keep themselves
safe.

Rate your visit from 1-5 and Why?

I will rate this 5 out 5 because this is what I would like to happen in a plant visit. Aside
from seminars and talks we were able to tour the vicinity and able to use some of the instruments
and see instruments up-close. An actual explanation outside which is very good and informative
because we were able to learn the methods that PAG-ASA uses monitor the weather, climate and
storm.

Would you recommend the company to others who will have company visit? Why?
Yes, I highly recommend other students to visit PAG-ASA Baguio because they provided
us a very informative seminar, we were able to learn lots of things specially on how PAG-ASA
monitors the storm weather and climate in our country.

Company. With the frequency of 95.1MHz, has operating in Baguio since August 8, 1992. It has
playing mainstream pop and other easy listening music. The studio is located at the Ground Floor
of Skyrise Hotel Dominican Road, Lourdes Proper, Baguio City

What happened during the tour?

Our class was separated into two groups. I was among the second group. On arriving at the radio
station we immediately proceed to the recording studio, we thought we would be just listening to
the anchor but also we were part of the live streaming for that day. After the introduction and live
streaming, the supervisor explained the brief history of Love Radio Baguio and at the same time
the background of the pretty-voiced anchor and how she landed a job on the radio station. After
the recording studio, we proceeded to the most top floor pf the building to see the cable racks and
transmission lines then after we went to the roof of that building to see the view of Baguio.

What did you learn during the visit?

During the visit we first went inside the Airing Booth while inside we saw two DJs, we were also
able to see the DJ talks while she’s on air we saw the different equipment she uses to adjust the
volume, sound effects and her voice like the mixers and mic that she uses. The head of their branch
also explains to us the origin of the company on when It started as well as his experience that he
is also a PUPian. After that we went outside and head upstairs, there we saw more equipment that
they use to broadcast their airing as well as the frequency they used. We also went to the roof and
there we saw the antenna that they use to broadcast their respective segment each and every day.

I will rate this 3 out 5. I really enjoyed listening to the DJ while she was broadcasting and using
the mixer and how she blended it with the additional background effects. The manager had also a
very intrestinh way in explaining things, he was also a bit of a comedian. The only part that I
thought was lacking was the space of our tour. The area where all transmission lines and data
cabinet was stored was only enough for the equipment. We were not able to see it up-close. Also,
one reason that I makes me like Love Radio was their rooftop.

Would you recommend the company to others who will have company visit? Why?
Yes, I definitly recommend this company to future ECEs of PUPTaguig. Not only it was
enjoyable but you will also be able to learn about broadcasting and how they make news, lifestyle
reporting, etc. sound in the radio while hearing it. Aside from that, others would be able to see the
antenna up-close used by the radio station. The staff were very kind and welcoming and at the
same time they also invited our lower years to visit them again.
