Recommendations
These settings will give you a good starting
point for a variety of photographic
situations. They will vary according the
light, lenses, and other equipment you are
working with. You’ll likely find many settings
that you want to adjust differently as you
develop your own style.
Super Simple
Everything on auto, use “Program Shift” to adjust the shutter speed and
aperture combination. The camera will use all focus points to achieve
focus. Be careful of the camera focusing on subjects in the foreground.
Landscape
You’ll likely want a lot of depth-of-field to keep everything in focus, the shutter
speed won’t matter if the wind isn’t blowing too much and you are on a tripod
(which you should be). Metering shouldn’t matter too much if you shoot a test
photo then check the histogram. Another good option would be Aperture Value
(AV), set the aperture for great depth of field (F/8-f/16) and make sure you can
hold the camera steady for the given shutter speed.
Portrait
Choose an aperture to give you shallow depth of field to separate your subject
from the background. Keep the ISO low for best quality. Set WB then possibly
add a bit of fill flash (try a -1 Flash Exposure Compensation) to fill in the
shadows and give a little sparkle to the eyes. Focus on the nearest eye, lock
focus in, and recompose into a pleasing frame. A second option would be to
be in AV mode while setting a wide aperture (f/1.4 - f/4).
Action
Manual exposure will give you the most consistent results unless you are shooting
in both direct sun and shade. Keep a shutter speed of 1/500 or faster to stop the
action. A fast lens (f/2.8) is a great benefit here. The ISO will most likely need to be
400 or higher. Indoor sports will often require ISO 3200 or more. Focus needs to
be put into the AI Servo mode. Use the continuous motor drive option and shoot in
short bursts. Another option is to be in the Aperture Value (AV) mode while setting
a “fast” aperture (f/1.4 - f/4). A third option would be Time Value (TV) with an
appropriately fast shutter speed chosen along with Auto ISO.
Basic Photography
The Aperture Value (AV) mode can be easily shifted to any available aperture/
shutter speed combination. Set an ISO as low as you can until you decide you
need a faster shutter speed. Use exposure compensation, as necessary, for
dark or bright subjects. Single point focus allows for precise control of focus
selection.
