When I make fan art or a drawing based on a photo, I consider

what is characteristic of that figure or person. What makes
someone unique? What makes you more striking? The good thing
is that an artist can show what they think is beautiful and you do
not have to to be conventionally “beautiful,” according to a
certain ideal. People often do their best to look slim in photos,
but in a drawing you can highlight someone's curves so that the
results are very beautiful. I have also sketched someone who was
insecure about his ears, but those ears made him unique. So I
just left them the way they were.

In character studies, the forms are much more extreme than in

real life as with caricatures. Mario and Pacman are very stylized.
Manga is even more realistic—a stylized cartoon movement with
subtle deviations, by drawing large eyes or very long legs.

Exercise #3: Adding Color

Now that you have a better sense of what colors and combinations you like, let's take a look at two approaches to
layering color into a space (or page, in this case). Below you'll find a vignette that we have duplicated for you. On this
page, begin by filling in the large areas and objects with color first (furniture, walls, rug, curtains...) and stop when you
feel the space has enough color (adding neutral tones and/or leaving white space in the remaining areas).

Exercise #4: Putting It Together

This final exercise is a chance for you to practice color combinations on a smaller scale, before diving into the full rooms
on the following pages. Use these three sofas to further explore different ways to bring color into your home furnishings.
You may want to start by coloring all three sofas a similar color to your current sofa (or the one you hope to purchase
someday). Then choose any three of the six prompts below to add color to the pillows—or make up your own approach!

• Rainbow: Use as many colors as you can for a vibrant look.

• Neutral: Apply your color very lightly or not at all, using variations of gray, tan, or cream.
• High Contrast: Mix dark saturated tones (including black) with their lighter counterparts (even white).
• Textural: Use the same or similar colors across all of the pillows, letting the patterns read as rich textures.
• Ombré: Choose a color and create a gradual gradient across the pillows from light to dark, or from one
similar color to another.
• Pop: Apply a neutral tone to most areas of the pillows, adding just one or two pops of color.

If you want to step up your lettering designs, it is always fun to add flourishes or illustrations! These can be used
to emphasize what you are trying to say, or to fill in negative space. Some of my go-to illustrations to add to my
designs are laurel branches or laurel wreaths. For holiday designs, I love to create a wreath shape and put my

Just like letter forms, these simple illustrations can be broken down into simple shapes. These may take some time
to get used to, so use the space provided to trace and practice!

When it comes to paper, you can draw on anything. I’ve been known to sketch floral designs on a napkin while
out with friends, or even on my arm if there is nothing else around. I encourage everyone to practice drawing
their floral designs whenever they have something to draw on. Much of my success in art today is due to the fact
that I have been constantly doodling and sketching and tracing and drawing wherever and whenever I can. So I
encourage you to do the same!

If you start feeling confident in your designs and are ready to take them to the next level by uploading them to your HOW TO DRAW MODERN FLORALS

The last and perhaps most important tool you’ll need to start creating your modern floral designs is inspiration. This
shouldn’t be too difficult seeing as inspiration may already be all around you! From actual flowers growing in your
