1.0 INTRODUCTION :

This specification is to be used as a guide in designing and detailing jacketed

pipe. The center, or core, pipe is carrying the product while the outer, or jacket,
carries the heating medium (See “HTF Design Principles”) which maintains the
product at a given temperature. The heating medium is determined by the
desired pressure temperature. There are number of substances used as
heating mediums. They are hot water, steam, and HTF. But we will only be
concerned with HTF. Flexibility should be designed into the pipe to eliminate
expansion problems. Be sure to include all necessary fabrication information on
the details. All dimensions are cold fabricating dimensions.

This specification should be used in conjunction with pipe specification.

CHEMTEX SPEC. NO. EIT012-39-01-10 REV. 0 SHEET 5 OF 68

REV.

2.0 HTF PRINCIPLES :

2.1 GENERAL :

2.1.1 Vapor supply, condensate and vent lines to be installed with

minimum bends and elbows.

2.1.2 Freeze prevention is required when installations are exposed to

ambient temperature 12°C or below.

2.1.3 From a maintenance safety point of view it is generally

recommended to slope all HTF to assure positive drainage. In
long pipe rack runs this becomes difficult to accomplish.
Therefore from process point of view we require all SXB, SXD,
SXC, SXF lines requiring slope and slopes refer p&id. Usually
SXA HTF supply from generation to CP building ends up having a
low point pocket in pipe rack. This possibility should be identified
earlier in design and a trap provided. HTF headers and manifolds
should never end with a blind flange. HTF headers should always
gradually reduce to the size of the last line in the system.

2.2 VAPOR SUPPLY (SXA) :

2.2.1 Vapor supply lines are to be sloped with provisions to dispose

condensate. To reduce heating time at start up, drip legs chemtex
standard XE-040143 and condensate traps are required at end of
vapor supply headers and below rising points of supply headers.

2.2.2 Primary vapor is to be supplied to process vessels and jacketed

process piping through control stations which may include a
desuperheater (See sketch “H” for typical desuperheater control
station arrangement).

2.2.3 Each heated unit, one process vessel and sometimes more than
one section of jacketed process pipe, is to have a separate vapor
supply vent and condensate drain connection (See sketches “A,
B, C & D”.

2.2.4 Pressure transmitter connections and supply thermocouples are to

be located in vapor supply lines immediately before first branch
supply to user.

2.2.5 Vapor supply lines are to be sized to give no more than 1°C
temperature drop between the supply thermocouple and the
thermocouple in the farthest heating zone vent accumulator.

2.2.6 With parallel vapor flow, sufficient valves and thermocouples are
to be provided to maintain adequate heat flow to each parallel
line segment.

2.2.7 The “Bottom Feed Principle” is to be used for supplying HTF

vapors to process vessels and jacketed process piping (See
sketches “A, B, C & D”).
CHEMTEX SPEC. NO. EIT012-39-01-10 REV. 0 SHEET 6 OF 68

REV.

2.2.8 The vapor supply to any vertical jacketed process piping is to be

one jacket pipe OD or 305 mm whichever is less above the center
line of the condensate outlet and is to enter the jacket 180° from
the condensate and vent connections (See sketches “A, B & C”).

2.2.9 Vapor supply jumpers are used to supply vapor to short

connecting sections of vertical jacket process piping. The outlet
vapor jumper connections on lower section of jacketed process
piping should be at minimum distance from center line of jumper
to flange. The inlet vapor jumper connection to the upper section
of jacketed process piping is to be one main jacket pipe OD or
305 mm whichever is less above condensate outlet line
connection (See sketch “A, B, & C”).

2.2.10 Vapor supply is to enter jacket of horizontal process vessels on

both sides near bottom (See sketch “E”).

2.2.11 Vapor supply connections to inclined jacketed process piping

should be on the top side at the lowest end (See sketch “B & C”).

2.2.12 Vapor supply connection to horizontal jacketed process piping

should be from the side and the vent and condensate
connections at opposite end.

2.2.13 Vapor supply jumpers on horizontal and inclined jacketed process

piping should be from top side. Outlet vapor jumper connection is
to be minimum distance between center line of jumper line to
flange. Inlet vapor jumper connection is to be one main jacket
pipe OD or 305 mm whichever is less from the condensate outlet
connection (See sketch “B & C”).
CHEMTEX SPEC. NO. EIT012-39-01-10 REV. 0 SHEET 7 OF 68

REV.

2.3 CONDENSATE (SXD) :

2.3.1 Condensate lines are to be self draining and sloped as per P&ID,
from heating zone to condensate receiver.

2.3.2 A condensate line should be connected to the lowest point or

points of the unit being heated (See sketches “A, B, C, D, E and
F”).

2.3.3 All condensate lines for parallel segments of a heated unit are to
connect to a common condensate header equipped with a
condensate seal loop and thermocouple. Seal loop maintains a
liquid seal. All lines must be individually sealed before loop (See
sketches “D and E”). The condensate lines to be close coupled to
thermocouple and thermocouple installed as close as possible to
heated unit.

2.3.4 If Condensate trap is required use be float style trap designed for
HTF (See sketch “J”).

2.3.5 Condensate jumpers are used to connect short sections of

vertical jacketed process line permitting the flow of condensate
from the upper section jacket to the jacket of the bottom section.
The outlet condensate jumper connection from the upper section
should be minimum distance center line of jumper to flange. The
inlet condensate jumper connection to the jacket of the lower
section should be one main jacket OD or 305 mm whichever is
less below the vapor jumper connection (See sketch “A & F”).

2.3.6 Condensate connections from horizontal jacketed process lines

are to be from the bottom side (See sketch “B & C”).

2.3.7 No condensate jumpers on horizontal and inclined jacketed

process lines are to be used. Individual condensate outlet lines to
be routed to condensate header, condensate jumper connection
is to be minimum distance from center line of jumper to flanges.
Inlet condensate jumper connection is to be one main jacket OD
or 305 mm whichever is less below outlet vapor jumper
connection (See sketch C”)
CHEMTEX SPEC. NO. EIT012-39-01-10 REV. 0 SHEET 8 OF 68

REV.

2.4 VENTS (SXB) :

2.4.1 Each heated unit should be vented at the highest point or points
through an individual accumulator into the vent header. (See
sketches “A, B, C, D, E and F”).

2.4.2 The accumulator to be connected to the heated unit with a line (3”
minimum) the size of the accumulator (See sketches “D & E”).

2.4.3 An individual vent accumulator to be used at each vent point (See

sketches “D & E”) and shall be located at minimum distance from
vent nozzle.

2.4.4 The accumulator thermowell to be per instrument standard,

installed per sketches “P”.

2.4.5 Each vent accumulator to be connected to the top of vent header

by means of ¾” (minimum) pipe with one operator accessible
needle valve. The needle valve to be installed in horizontal
position if possible, but operator accessible. Pipe to slope from
valve to vent accumulator and vent header.

2.4.6 All vent lines from parallel segments of a heated unit are to
connect to a common vent sub-header equipped with a gate
valve isolating sub-header from main vent header (See sketches
“D and E”).

2.4.7 Vent header lines to slope minimum as per P&ID direction of flow.

2.4.8 Vent to be 180° from vapor supply on vertical lines or vessels

(See sketches “A and D”).

2.4.9 The vent on a horizontal jacketed line to be at the opposite end of

the pipe from the supply (See sketch “B & C”).

2.4.10 All unused future nozzles at top of receivers or jacketed vessels

must be provided with a vent or means for connecting to a vent
system. Corrosion may occur at these high points when no
means for venting is provided.

2.4.11 Limit vent line lifts to 5 meter (15 feet).

CHEMTEX SPEC. NO. EIT012-39-01-10 REV. 0 SHEET 9 OF 68

REV.

2.5 LIQUID HTF (SXE) :

2.5.1 For maximum efficiency of heat transfer it is necessary to assure

jackets are full of liquid. This is generally easily accomplished by
feeding SXE to bottom of jackets and returning from top. Due to
process requirements of feeding SXE counter current to process
flow it may be necessary to feed SXE to the top of a jacket
section. In this case during initial filling of jackets air must be
vented from system. From a safety point of view this is best
accomplished by adding an SXB vent line tied into vacuum
system at any jacket high point where air may be trapped. This
can also be accomplished by routing a vent line from jacket high
point to an operating level where SXE can be collected in a
container during system charging procedure.

2.5.2 Particular care is required in designing of SXE “JUMPER” piping

on jacketed piping system. Specifically at oligomer pumps and
dual oligomer control valve and flow meter stations when
arranged in horizontal positions. Generally it is recommended, as
SXE supply and return jumps from piping jacket section to jacket
section, to keep SXE piping close coupled to jacketed pipe
considering both jacketed piping and HTF piping will be insulated
together. This reduces piping mazes at complicated jumper
arrangements and provides clear maintenance access to process
piping. The exception to this is jumper piping maintenance break
flanges. These should always be arranged to be accessible from
an outside operating aisle and positioned so that only flange
insulation and cover requires removal and pipe insulation and
cover is left undisturbed. When valving is required on jumper
piping these must always be arranged in such a manner as to be
accessible from an outside operating aisle. It is poor practice to
cause an operator to climb over or crawl under hot jacketed
piping to access a HTF jumper valve.

2.6 HTF CHARGE AND DRAIN (SXF) :

Is used on both vapor and liquid HTF systems. The purpose of

SXF is to initially fill HTF system on start up. During plant
operation and maintenance SXF is under vacuum pressure
returning to vent tank and is used to positively drain system
during maintenance operations. Generally it is difficult to initially identify
and indicate on P&ID’s all jacket low points requiring SXF drains.
Therefore it is necessary especially on jacketed piping to review
systems after they are arranged to assure proper amount of SXF
drain lines are provided for.
CHEMTEX SPEC. NO. EIT012-39-01-10 REV. 0 SHEET 10 OF 68

REV.

2.7 HTF RELIEF (SXC) :

When relief valves discharge to a closed system, that is a relief

valve header, the header must be positioned so that all relief
valves are located above header. Relief valves must have
unobstructed flow to header with minimum amount of bends.
Relief valve discharge lines must roll down into header at 45° in
direction of header flow. It is also recommened to maintain a
minimum distance of approximately 1 meter between relief valve
discharge tie-ins to header. The combination of 45° lateral
directing flow toward header discharge point and maintaining 1
meter distance between branches on header will avoid any
possibility of back flow in system and possible safety hazard if
one relief valve discharges while another is in maintenance mode. A
properly designed relief valve system avoids the necessity to add
maintenance block valves or spectacle blind flanges on relief
valve discharge lines.
