Introduction
• In a strategically fluid environment, need to manage national security
• Japan has engaged India (and Australia) moving beyond its long-standing treaty ally,
the United States
• 2000 – Path-breaking visit by Prime Minister Mori’s to India: Global Partnership in the 21st
century was launched.
• 2006 – Prime Minister Abe and Prime Minister Singh Joint Statement; relationship was
upgraded to a Global and Strategic Partnership with the provision of Annual Prime
Ministerial Summits.
• October 2008 – Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation with India.
• 2011 - Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)
• January 2014 – PM Abe Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day Parade
• August 2014 – PM Modi visit to Japan; relationship to a ‘Special Strategic and Global
Partnership’
• December 2015 – PM Abe visit to India; 16 Agreements/MoUs/MoCs/LoIs were
signed/exchanged
• March 2016 – ‘Visa on Arrival’ for Japanese travellers
• Nov 2016 – PM Modi visit to Japan; 10 Agreements on a wide range of areas, including
• cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy,
• manufacturing skill transfer programme,
• outer space
• marine, earth and atmospheric science and technology, agriculture and food
• related industry, transport and urban development, textiles, cultural exchange and ports
• This presentation will limit itself to the ambit of security/defence and technology
cooperation between India and Japan.
