fnsdag ) <<MISSION STATEMENT
ncustry,
To work in unison with all the Stakenolders in the steet
0 as to evolve ways and means for more efficient usage of steel
and provide opumum value to the customers
‘The Institute
‘Steél {s the backbone of all industries and the basic ingredient for growth and development of a country
Traditionally, the fortunes of the steel industry have been linked to the economic cycle ofthe country Per capita
consumption of steel speaks volumes about the relative position of the country on the development frontier
Im India, the per capita consumption of steel stands at 27 4 keg (including Alloy Stee!) compared to 87 kg in
China and a whopping 121 4g by the world average Use of steel in large steel consuming sectors like
constriction in India is also quite low in comparison to developed and developing countries. Moreover, steels
also completely recyclable and thus environment-trendly Hence, a large potential exists in furthering the usage
of stee! in various segments ofindustry
‘With this view in mind, Ministry of Steel along with the major steel producers of she nation have promoted and
‘established the institute for Stee! Development and Growth (INSDAG| at Kolkata The Institute is registered as @
‘Society’ under societies Repistration Act of West Bengal, with its registered office at Tspat Bhawan, 40,
Chowringhee Road, Kolkata - 700071 The Insticute is 8 member-based norprofit making organization Its
‘operating office is at Ispat Niketan, 52/14, Ballyguage Circular Road Xolkats ~ 700019 As on 1* December
2001, the Institute has more than 400 members
Management of the Institute
Une daily affairs of the institute are looked after by the Disector General Mt guidance
and direction is provided by an Executive Council (EC) Two other functional committees namely the Executive
Committee of INSDAG (ECl) and Project Review Committee {PRC) respectively provide administrative and
technical guidance The Institute has defined its mission rele and functions and evolved its short medium and
long term Actinties Plans
Role of the Institute
‘Ihe Institute primarily works towards the development of technology in steel usage and the market for the steel
faternity Some ofits roles are:
1 Creating awareness amongst potential users about affordability and benefits of siee!
2 Providing prompt advisory eervice on materials. construction practices, interpretation of codes ete and
featng ah evaronment for better usage of see by acquing an esteminating roves about the
st practices
3 Upgrading the sls of the work force by organising reffesher courses / training programmes and
offering better technical know-how, design aids and teaching aids.
‘ Communicating the benefits of steel vis-avis other competitive materials through life eycle cost
studies, where required
8 Providing requisite thrust to increase steel consumption in rural arcas
6 —_ Assisting in the development of ancillary industries, which boost the usege of stect and creating new
market for steel usage
Initial Focus
INSDAG strives to expand the tse of steel in the residential, commercial, infrastructure industrial and rural
segments of the construction industry However, in the coming years, it will also cover automotive, power rail
‘and road wansportation and irrigation segments In doing so, INSDAG organizes a series of seminars and
‘workshops which act as a platform for all connected to the stec! supply chain ~ architects, consultants
structural engineers, steel producers, ‘cost consultants, contractors, fabricators, hardware suppliers,
government agencies, speciflers ete These seminars and workshops are not only the forum for addressing the
best practices in steel usage but also focus on identifying the constraints in the usage of steel and removing the
Spetimeats Members ae euuded to parelpate in these programmes at discounted fer as per Tnstte
Main Activities
To faciitate impraved interaction among agencies involved in steel supply chain as also about purchase of steel,
the Institute has published “Directory of Steel Supply Chain’ and “Buyer's Manual” Insttute is regularly
organizing fresher courses on cost effective composite conacruction technology. Tt has also published literature
fon corrosion protection of steel and has brought out Handbooks on Design of Composite Construction, Case
Shudies on Pre-Engineered Buildings ana Space Frames, Welding Manual, Life Cycle Analysis of Building eve
Advisory Services
Members can avail advisory services irom INSDAG on interpretation of standards construction
cost-benetit analysis, best practices and benchmarks, sources of supply ete INSDAC
talented group of specialists who are available to members for consultation
Publications and Reference Documents
INSDAG has set up a Ubrary of books, design-aids ond waching-aids for easy access to information by its
members INSDAG vs publishing and circulating among its members the latest developments in the construction
land other steel consuming sectors through its techuical journal-Steei in Construction and the in-house news
bulledn ~ INSDAG NEWS. The Insutute is also providing its members, state of the art literature published by
‘The Steel Construction Institute, UK through a copyright agreement for a selected list of documentsINSDAG Publication No. INS/PUB/021
