3.1 Volunteering at Zoo Negara

Volunteers will be involved in daily operations at Zoo Negara Malaysia, namely feeding,
exhibit projects, exhibit modification, and behavioural enrichments for the animals. Other roles may
also include landscaping in the zoo, research, fund-raising activity, customer service operation, and
events happening in the zoo.

This activity aims to help students build new skills. At the zoo, students are able to learn
a lot about animals, zoos and conservation. Students may also learn about running events, team
building, interacting with the public or how to handle animals. Donating some time at the zoo also
strengthens the sense of community towards animals and nature. There are a lot of people (staff
and volunteers) that have the same interest. It doesn’t take long for volunteers to stop thinking of it
as helping at the zoo and start regarding it as spending time at the zoo. Students will also definitely
have new experiences at the zoo. This is a catch as not much people have been to the zoo to
volunteer.
