SPN 729/FMI 7
This SPN indicates a problem with the grid heater.
1. Ensure the grid heater positive and negative battery cables are securely fastened at both ends.
[a] If properly fastened, go to next step.
[b] If not properly fastened, repair as necessary.
2. Disconnect the grid heater harness connector.
3. Turn the Ignition ON.
4. Measure the voltage between the grid heater harness connector pin 1 and pin 4.
[a] If the voltage is between 4.25 and 4.75, go to step 6.
[b] If the voltage is less than 4.25, go to step 5.
5. Measure the voltage between the grid heater harness connector pin 1 and ground.
[a] If the voltage is less than 4.25, repair wire between pin 1 of the grid heater harness
connector and pin 79 of the MCM.
[b] If the voltage is between 4.25 and 4.75, repair wire between pin 4 of the grid heater harness
connector and pin 95 of the MCM.
6. Measure the voltage between grid heater harness connector pin 3 and ground.
[a] If the voltage is between 2.25 and 2.75, go to step 7.
[b] If the voltage is less than 2.25, repair wire between pin 3 of the grid heater harness
connector and pin 92 of the MCM.
7. Turn the ignition OFF for 15 seconds, then back ON.

NOTE:
This measurement must be done within 30 seconds of Key ON; after this time has elapsed the
voltage will drop to approximately 9 volts. This is a normal condition.

8. Measure the voltage between pin 2 of the grid heater harness connector and ground.
[a] If the voltage is greater than 11.5, replace the grid heater.
[b] If the voltage is less than 11.5, cycle the ignition and recheck voltage. If voltage is still
below 11.5, repair wire between pin 2 of the grid heater harness connector and pin 41
of the MCM.
