JD SERIES PULLING TOOL

4JDC
"JD" SERIES PULLING TOOL
OPERATION MANUAL

DESCRIPTION:

The "JD" Series Pulling Tools are used to pull

subsurfacedevices which have an external fishneck.

There are three tools in the "JD" Series, the "JDC",

"JDS",and the "JDL" Pulling tools.

The "JD" letters indicates it is a "jar down" to

release tool.

The third letter designates the core's length. A "C"

coreindicates it as the long core (to catch a short
fishneck ),the "S" core = a short core ( to catch a long
fishneck ),and the "L" core = the shortest core which
has limiteduse ( catches limited long fishnecks ).

Each cores length has a "reach", which refers to the

distancefrom the bottom of the core installed in the
tool, tothe engaging shoulder of the dogs installed in the
tool.

The core of these tools have an internal thread that

aprong may be attached for equalizing operations.

The "JD" Series Pulling Tools consist of a fishneck with

pin connection, skirt, core, internal core spring, core cap,
holding pawls, external spring for assisting the dogs, and a
emergency releaseshear pin. The jar down to release shear
pin, allows to abort operationswithout retrieving. The dogs
retract and expand to latchonto the external fishneck of the
subsurface device, but if the pullingoperation is aborted,
the dogs will retract again to release.Through minor
component changes, these tools can be convertedinto
"shear up" to release tools, although they actually become
a"JU" Tool ( See "JU" Series Pulling Tool Manual ). The
"JD" PullingTools are run on a conventional wireline tool
string, and in certainapplications can be used as a
running tool.

PULLING:

Pulling a subsurface device using the "JD" Series

Pulling Tool:

GENERAL:

If needed, equalize the well pressure above and belowthe

subsurface device before beginning the pulling procedure on
certain operations, you can use the properequalizing prong on
the pulling tool for equalizing.

1. Attach the fully assembled and working "JD" Series

Pulling Toolonto the wireline tool string.
2. Lower the wireline tool string and pulling tool down the
well untilit reaches the subsurface device.
3. Lower and allow the weight of the wireline tool string and
pullingtool to engage the external fishneck of the tool being
pulled. The dogs on the pulling tool will move up and
outwards as theyengage, then slide over the fishneck and
spring close inward to hold.
4. Upward jarring on the wireline tool string should release
the tool.
5. Retrieve the wireline tool string and pulling tool with tool
attachedfrom the well.

Aborting the pulling operation with the "JD" Pulling

Tool:

1. To release the "JD" Pulling Tool from the subsurface

devicewithout pulling it, jar downwards to shear the shear pin
in thepulling tool. When the pin shears, the core spring
moves thecore upwards and the pawls engage a shoulder on
the corewhich in turn pulls the dogs upwards on the skirt to
release.
2. With the shear pin sheared, the pulling tool is free from the
subsurface device.

To release the retrieved subsurface device in workshop:

1. Grasp the dogs on the pulling tool in the area of the pawls.
2. Pull the dogs upwards to compress the dog spring and
allowthe dogs to open up and release the fishneck of the
subsurfacedevice.
3. Pull the device away from the pulling tool.

ASSEMBLY / DISASSEMBLY
ASSEMBLY:
Assembly for 1 1/4" and 1 3/8" size "JD" Pulling Tools:

1. Slide the dogs onto and over the threaded end of the
skirt down to the matching mill slots in the skirt.
2. Align the legs of the dogs with the mill slots on the
skirt and push down on the dogs to sit them in the
slots of the skirt.
3. One at a time, place grease onto a pawl's outside
and bottom, place on the end of a long screwdriver,
and feed through the threaded end of the skirts I.D.
to insert the pawl into the pawls window in the skirt.
The grease will hold the pawls in place in the skirt.
4. Slide the core up into the lower end of the skirt,
being careful that the pawls do not dislodge.
5. Slide the dog spring onto and over the threaded end
of the skirt.
6. Make up the spring retainer onto the skirt.
7. Align the shear pin holes of the core and spring retainer
and install the shear pin. File the pin flush with
the O.D. of the spring retainer if needed.
8. Place the core spring onto the core.
9. Thread the core cap onto the core and tighten.
10. Place the shear pin cover onto the spring retainer.
11. Screw the fishneck onto the spring retainer andtighten.

DISASSEMBLY:
1. Reverse procedure as assembly.

REPINNING:
Repinning after shearing pin in 1 1/4" and 1 3/8" tools:

1. Remove tool assembly from the fishneck by unscrewing the

spring retainer from the fishneck.
2. Remove the shear pin cover from the spring retainer.
3. Remove the core spring from the core, Do Not remove the core.
4. Align the shear pin holes, remove sheared pin, and install a new
pin. File pin flush with O.D. of spring retainer if needed.
5. Re-install the shear pin cover onto the spring retainer.
6. Re-install the core spring onto the core.
7.Re-install the core cap onto the core using ascrewdriver at the
bottom end of the core at the end of the skirt.
8. Re-install the fishneck onto the spring retainer and tighten.

O.D. of the skirt if needed.
6. Place the core spring onto the core.
7. Thread the core cap onto the core and tighten.
8. Install the set screw into the core cap and tighten.
9. Slide the dog spring over the skirt.
10. On the 4" size, slide the spring cover over the dog
spring.
11. Screw the fishneck onto the skirt and tighten.

DISASSEMBLY:
1. Reverse procedure as assembly.

REPINNING:
Repinning after shearing pin in 1 1/2" thru 4" tools:

1. Remove the tool assembly from the fishneck by

unscrewingthe skirt from the fishneck.
2. Remove the spring cover ( 4" only ) and dog spring
from the skirt.
3. Use a "repinning tool" to move the core down and match
up the shear pin holes in the core and skirt, remove
sheared pin and install new pin. File pin flush withO.D. of
the skirt if needed.
4. Re-install the dog spring and spring cover ( 4" ) onto
