Grading Policy

Grading Scale:

In our classroom grades will range from 0-4 instead of 0-100. This scale is an attempt to
diminish the large gap in numerical grades for which would constitute a failing grade (0-
59). Failing grades of zeros on a 0-100 scale make it close to impossible for students to
improve their grade in some cases. The 0-4 score will correspond to students mastery
of content, effort, and improvement. Mastery will correspond to 2 out of the points.
Students at a “beginning” level will receive a score of a 1, students at a “developing”
level will receive a score of 1.5, and students at the “mastering” level will receive a score
of 2 points. One point will be rewarded for a student’s effort and participation in class.
The final point in the 4-point grading system will be awarded for a student’s
improvement in the subject area. If a student is unhappy with a grade, they can
resubmit an assignment at any time for it to be regarded.

Graded Assignments:

Most assignments will be graded according to the 4-point grading scale. Assignments
like quizzes, tests, and classwork will be evaluated on this system. Projects and
portfolios will also be graded according to the 4-point grading system but they will be in
the form of rubrics. The rubrics will also consider mastery, improvement, and effort in
student assessment but will have more information on what is expected of each of the
numerical grading level. Additionally, students will have frequent opportunities to
complete peer reviews and self-reflections. Self-reflections allow students to grade
themselves on their effort, mastery, and improvement.

Timeliness:

I expect students to feel responsible for their learning and take ownership of their work.
Thus, assignments should be turned in and completed on time. Although, if there is a
reason an assignment cannot be completed on time just come have a conversation with
me and we can make a time line that will better work with your schedule outside of
school. If there are any questions surrounding assignments, I will be available to answer
them during lunch or after school.
