What is Material Handling?
 Material Handling is defined as “The basic
operations performed in connection with the
movement of bulk, packaged and individual
products in the required state within the
manufacturing or service establishment.”
 Material handling amounts to 15 to 20 % of the
total cost of the product without adding any value
to it and hence it is a very important part in
production planning.
Objectives of Material Handling:
 Minimize Cost of material handling.
 Minimize Delays and Interruptions by making the
required product available at the right time in the
right quantity and quality.
 Safety in material handling by improvement of
working conditions.
 Prevention of damage to the materials.
 Lower in-process inventory.

Material Handling devices
Material Handling devices can be classified into 3
basic categories on basis of their operating principle.

The 3 categories are :

 Conveyors

 Cranes and Trucks

 Industrial Trucks
Conveyors
 Conveyors perform the movement of uniform loads
between fixed points.
 Conveyors are very useful when loads are uniform and a
continuous movement of the material is desired along a
fixed route.
 Types of conveyors are:
 Belt Conveyors

 Roller Conveyors

 Screw Conveyors

 Pipeline Conveyors

 Monorail Conveyors

 Trolley Conveyors

Cranes and Hoists
 Cranes are overhead devices capable of moving
materials vertically and laterally in area of limited
length and width and height.
 Cranes are generally used for lifting and lowering
heavy objects.
 Hoists are used for loading, unloading, raising and
lowering heavy or long objects
 Cranes and hoists are used when loads are not
uniform and their movement is also varied.

Industrial Trucks
 Hand or powered vehicles are used for movement of
mixed or uniform loads intermittently over varying
parts which have suitable running surfaces and
clearances.
 These are mainly used for transportation of the
material from one place to another.
 The main types are :
 Forklift truck
 Platform Truck
 Tractor trailer

Selection of Material Handling Equipment

 The Material Handling Equipment is to be selected

after due consideration of the following factors:
 Nature of Operation
 Material to be handled
 Distance over which material is to be handled
 Installation and operating costs
 Safety Considerations
 Engineering Factors
 Equipment reliability
Symptoms of Bad Material Handling

 Frequent Interruption in production due to delay in

handling and supplying of materials.
 Skilled Labour performing storing, movement and
handling of materials.
 Damage to material in handling.
 Accumulation of materials work-in-process at
different locations.
 Crowded workspace.
