Scientific method vocabulary

hypothesis A supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of 

limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation

variable Not consistent or having a fixed pattern; liable to change.

independent variable A variable often denoted by whose variation does not depend 
on that of another.

Dependent variable A variable often denoted by whose variation does not depend 
on that of another.

Controlled variable The control variable or scientific constant in scientific

experimental element.

model A three-dimensional representation of a person or thing or of 

a proposed structure.

theory A supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain 

something, especially one based on general principles.

law The system of rules that a particular country or community 

recognizes as regulating the actions.
