Introduction

Brazil has been doing great lately economically; actually it has been one of the countries that the
economic crash has knocked them less than other countries. While the domestic demand is rising,
it has established a strong position through sustainable agribusiness and exporting of raw
materials, thanks to biotechnology. Brazil has a lot of natural resources and its current boost is due
to export, and the demand of many countries such as China, but the home market is not low, it is
doing real well through consumer purchasing power growth.

Brazil is already the world's largest supplier of sugar, coffee, beef, poultry, ethanol, orange juice
and tobacco. One of the methods that have done this is the establishment a ripe expansive
agribusiness sector. Brazil has fertile soil, which helps to accommodate modern technology and a
highly industrialized agricultural sector.

Method of growth

The institution EMPRABA (Brazilian Corporation for Agriculture Research), which is linked to
the Ministry of Agriculture have been developing and using feasible solutions through technology
transfer. Through Empraba Brazil has had an a reduced production cost and increase in the yield
of food; Empraba found and generated more than nine thousand modern technologies for Brazilian
Agriculture. “Embrapa’s Center of Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (CENARGEN) now has
one of the strongest team of scientists in the fields of genetic resources, biotechnology, plant
protection and biological control.”(EULAFF Consortium) CENARGEN’s mission is to “bring
solutions to the sustainable development of agribusiness, generating, adapting and transferring
knowledge and technologies in genetic resources, biotechnology, biological control and biological
safety, for the benefit of society”. They are implementing several Microprogrammes such as
Cloning and characterization of the gene coding for branching enzyme in cassava and cassava
sugar trade, molecular identification of mite species of the genus Brevipalpus Donnadieu
economic and quarantine importance for Brazil & Analysis of gene expression in spontaneous
mutants in metabolic pathway of sucrose / starch in the root of carotenoids in cassava (Manihot
esculenta Crantz).
Another aid is Bayer CropScience which will lead Brazilian sugarcane technology center on to
research and development of biotech sugarcane varieties. They will increase the efficacy of
ethanol production, through the growth of several high sugar content sugar cane varieties.
“Sugarcane is the most productive crop for economically viable renewable energy with the best
CO2 balance.”(Bayer CropScience Editorial Service, 2010)  “According to the Brazilian Institute
for Geography and Statistics (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatistika; IGBE), the sugar-
cane harvest in 2008 was just over 650 million tons and is expected to rise by 6.4 percent to over
690 million tons in 2009.”( Bayer CropScience Editorial Service, 2010) This entire yield will be
processed to cane sugar, ethanol & other products.

They took care of crop protection, such as soybean rust caused by the fungus Phakopsora
pachyrhizi, which causes the loss of all the plants’ leaves and cuts harvest by 80%. Nativo® and
Sphere Max® which contains the active ingredient trifloxistrobin and Atento® were used to
eliminate this aggressive fungus as a seed treatment. These were compared through trials by
Empraba and have found that they have great efficiency, due to them also being adaptable to
various climate and region conditions.

Conclusion

Brazil has had gross domestic product (GDP) of US$ 1,586 billion in 2008. Their exports are still
based on agricultural and raw materials but they are expanding to industrial products such as
aircraft construction; to get a greater share of the world market. In conclusion Brazil is one of the
largest economical countries in Latin America. Many low-income Brazilians have become
consumers with cash to spend, and they are boosting domestic demand, mainly for food.
Consumption now accounts for 60.7 percent of Brazil's GDP. In conclusion this outcome has
been accomplished through hard work & real goals set to be made, where according to the IGBE
the unemployment rate has been falling steadily from 10.6 percent in 2006 to 7.6 percent in 2008;
and Brazil’s economy is in steady rise.
