This exhibit aimed to tell the story not just the life of our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal but also the
significant events why Rizal became the Rizal that he is today with different mediums of art.
The group agreed on the topic about “childhood of Rizal”, Rizal’s childhood had always been
discussed during our elementary days specially the story about Rizal and the gamu-gamo. The
story of the moth has been one of the stories that makes a big impact in Dr. Jose Rizal’s life.
That lesson struck Rizal until he grew old.
Donya Teodora tells a story of a moth, an insect that have a strange habit of being attracted to
the bright light. One of the major symbols in the story is the flame in which the moth is willing to
die for. It implies that there are things that certain people are willing to do even if it may cost
them their lives. The mother moth represents all the people who live their lives very cautious to
ensure a long one. The young moth represents all the people who don’t. The mother moth
wishes to live his life with half of the happiness but twice as long, while the moth, on the
opposite, would rather live its life to the fullest even if it means to be cut short.
The young moth tried to break into lamp to even though her mother warned him that it may
cause trouble. Just like our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, he did not stop in searching for the light
to save the country, he was not afraid to approach the light even though many other threats or
obstacles were there, even if it causes him death.
Rizal is a person who was probe by the limitations of the society he is currently involved in. The
story of gamu-gamo is probably one of the influences on his youth to do dangerous things. The
fire, like the rebellion against the mighty, is very dangerous. Her mother and her family
repeatedly restraining her from stopping the opposition to the Spaniards because of the danger
it would bring to his life. Since childhood, he has seen a trait that opposes the usual flow of
people. He is a fan of not being able to do something because this person's dictates are
prohibited. This is why he has been involved in many chaos since childhood, but this is the
reason why he made a change in the city and until now we are honoring his heroism. Rizal, like
the young moth, approached the fire even though he knew he would have consumed it. He
wrote subversive books expressing opposition to the Spaniards to get close to the arousing and
dangerous flames of social change. The story of gamu-gamo is one of the reports that Rizal
lived on since childhood. As a result of his life, Rizal became more than a Filipino with real
courage, he became a hero.
As an architecture student, art comes in different forms’ for us it doesn’t just have to be
traditional like art or paper so we decided to make intricate, detailed sculpture from a wire.
Materials used:
1 mm copper wire
.50 mm copper wire
Candy wire
Pliers
Scissor
Glue
Piece of wood
Paint, black and gold
Fist we draw an outline of the young Jose Rizal and Donya Teodora, the book and the moth.
One of the easiest ways to make a wire sculpture is to create an outline of an object. Wire has a
very linear quality that can give the impression of a pencil or pen drawing. Taking a long piece
of wire, bend it into the basic shape of the portrait. Then we cut smaller pieces of wire to
reinforce the details such as the eyes nose and lips and make details like the hair. Use your
fingers or the long-nose pliers to help attach those onto your main form by twisting their ends to
wrap around the main wire. It takes some practice to get the shape the way you want it, and you
have to be careful so that you don't squish the sections of the sculpture you've already created.
After we finished on making the wire sculpture we painted it with black acrylic paint and the gold
just to add some gloss to it. Then we attached it to the piece of wood provided to serve as its
stand.
