Massive storm muscles across Midwest

CHICAGO — Strong wind and
torrential rain buffeted the Midwest
today as forecasters predicted the
giant storm could be the most pow-
erful to hit Illinois in over seven
decades.
The massive storm muscled its
way across an area that stretched
from the Dakotas to the eastern Great
Lakes. Severe thunderstorm warn-
ings blanketed much of the Midwest,
and tornado watches were issued
from Arkansas to Ohio. Flights were
canceled at O’Hare International
Airport, a major hub for American
and United airlines.
The National Weather Service
said the storm is one of the strongest
to hit the region in decades.
“We’re expecting sustained winds
on the order of 35 to 40 mph with
gusts up to 60 mph throughout the
afternoon,” said Edward Fenelon,
a weather service meteorologist in
Romeoville, Ill. He said the storm’s
central pressure is equivalent to a
Category 3 hurricane.
“This is a very different type of
event,” Fenelon said. “But that does
give an indication of the magnitude
of the winds. This isn’t something
you see even every year.”

Jim Allsopp said the storm could
be among the worst to hit Illinois in
more than 70 years.
Commuters in the Chicago area
faced blustery, wind-driven rain as
they waited for trains to take them
downtown before dawn. Some hud-
dled underneath train overpasses to
stay out of the gusts, dashing to the
platform at the last minute. In the
city’s downtown Loop, construc-
tion workers wore heavy slickers
and held onto their hard-hats, heavy
metal street signs rattled against
their posts and umbrellas provided
relief only for as long as they could
last.
“The wind was almost blowing
horizontally. The rain was slapping
me in the face,” said Anthony Quit,
a 24-year-old jewelry store worker in
Chicago. “My umbrella shot off ... It
was pretty dangerous.”
He said the wind was so strong
that his car “was starting to veer off
the road.”
Another commuter described a
frightening pre-dawn drive to the
train station.
“It was raining really, really hard.
Coming down the street I was kind of
getting really nervous; even with the
bright lights you couldn’t see in front
of you,” said Delphine Thompson,
53, a telecom manager in Chicago.
The weather service said gusts that
topped 50 miles per hour slammed
into the Chicago suburb of Lombard
early today.
High winds forced authorities to
stop flights at O’Hare International
Airport in Chicago.
A spokeswoman for the Chicago
Department of Aviation said offi-
cials issued a temporary “ground
stop” at O’Hare, meaning no flights
are departing. Aviation Department
spokeswoman Karen Pride said
more than 125 flights were canceled
at O’Hare. No cancelations are being
reported at Midway International
Airport on Chicago’s South Side.
The storm was also picking up
speed on Twitter, where people
were dubbing it “Chiclone” and
“Windpocalypse.”
In St. Louis, pre-dawn strong
winds were blamed for a partial
building collapse that sent bricks,
mortar, roofing and some window
air-conditioning units raining down
onto a sidewalk. No one was injured,
and inspectors were inspecting the
1920s-era building.
In Ballwin, a St. Louis suburb, a
woman escaped with minor injuries
when a tree fell onto her home as she
slept, covering her and her husband
with dust and insulation. The family
managed to get out of the house and
call emergency responders.
In Milwaukee, some restaurants
moved sidewalk furniture indoors
as the storm approached and hom-
eowners scrambled to batten down
anything that might be swept away
by the storm.
Meanwhile, much of North Dakota
was under a blizzard warning. The
National Weather Service said up to
10 inches of snow could fall in some
areas into early Wednesday.
The snow is expected across
North Dakota and into northern
South Dakota. Forecasters said wind
gusts of more than 50 mph in many
areas would make travel treacher-
ous.

wind warning. Those states are:

DELPHOS — When German
student Carolin Scheer arrived
at St. John’s High School for
her first day, she was confused
about where to go and how
things were run. Her anxiety
was quickly eased when her
peers made her feel welcome.
“My first day I was so con-
fused and I was just running
around, unsure of where to go,”
Scheer, 16, said. “But every-
body was so friendly and soon
everybody was helping me. It
was pretty cool. It was easy
to find some friends because
everybody was willing to talk
to me.”
While there are certainly
some differences between
Germany and the United States,
Scheer said the most marked
differences she’s noticed have
been in school.
“I’d be an 11th-grader in
Germany and here I’m a senior,”
she said. “I do stuff with other
seniors but we have classes with
other grades, too. In Germany,
we have a different schedule
every day and we would get out
of school at like 1 p.m. but here
you get out at 3 p.m. It was a
little difficult at first but now it’s
okay. My favorite subjects are
gym and religion.”
In her spare time, Scheer has
tried new activities and having
fun with her host family.
“I tried tumbling with my
host sister; I don’t do that
anymore and I might be able
to go horseback riding here
with a friend but I’m not
sure yet,” she said. “That’s
what I do in Germany. I’ve
done lots of exciting things
with my host family, the
Kovermans. We went to the
lake and went tubing and
knee-boarding. We don’t
have anything like that in
Germany. We’ve also vis-
ited Columbus.”
“The football games have
been a lot of fun, too,” Scheer
continued. “We don’t really
have football in German or
cheerleaders. There are some
cheerleaders but only in big-
ger cities, like cities the size of
Lima.”
While she may be having
fun, Scheer still misses home.
“I miss my family and friends
the most,” she said. “I have an
older sister and she came here
four years ago. She was with
the same host family and we
came back with her to visit them
and I just decided to come back
again. My host family is great.
I’ll miss them when I go back,
and my friends. Hopefully, I’ll
come back.”
Scheer’s host family will
miss her as well.
“We love having her here,”
her host mother Chris Koverman
said. “We loved having her sis-
ter here as well. They’re both
great kids. They’re like our own
kids really.”

Letters to the Editor
DEAR EDITOR:
We’ve read several letters
criticizing the pamphlet dis-
tributed at St. John’s Festival.
Unfortunately, the message
was overlooked. The pam-
phlet clearly stated St. John’s
was not telling anyone how to
vote but was merely clarifying
some issues addressed in the
Delphos City School’s bro-
chure promoting the income
tax levy.
The City School’s bro-
chure states that, “The Earned
Income Tax will only be taxed
on wages.” St. John’s pamphlet
further details that by say-
ing, “The proposed Delphos
City Schools tax is an earned
income tax. That means sala-
ries and wages, tip income,
self-employment income and
most farm income will be
taxed. The pamphlet goes on
to explain this is a new, perma-
nent tax beginning in 2011 that
will not expire like other ballot
measures in previous years. To
help visualize the impact of a
1 percent earned income tax,
examples are given: “With a 1
percent income tax on $50,000
in earned income, you’ll pay
$500 per year; for $100,000, it
would be $1,000 per year.”
The pamphlet also discuss-

a few years if the income tax
levy passes. It states: “If you
own a home which has been
assessed by the Allen County
Auditor’s Office at $100,000,
you will see a reduction of
$99.76 in 2013.” It goes on
to explain that senior citizens

discount on their property
tax so they will experience a
lower reduction of $74.82 on a
$100,000 home.
St. John’s pamphlet also
stated that everyone should
exercise their right to vote on
Nov. 2. In addition, it provided
a web site for anyone who
needs an absentee ballot.

Miller said he’d be transpar-
ent and honest with the pub-
lic. But shortly before the
judge’s ruling, Miller, an
attorney who’s never held
elected office, declared his
personal life off limits. He
accused his opponents of try-
ing to divert voters’ attention
to “petty” issues from his past

him whether he believed his
instructors and classmates at
the U.S. Military Academy
at West Point would say he
has lived up to the code of
honor.
That drew former Alaska
Gov. Sarah Palin, a Murkowski
foe and Miller supporter, back
into the race. On Facebook
on Monday, Palin wrote, “I
find it astonishing that a sit-
ting U.S. senator from Alaska
would challenge the honor of
a decorated combat veteran.”
Murkowski, 53, is trying to
do what no Senate candidate
has done since 1954: win as
a write-in candidate. Since re-
entering the race last month,
she has balanced her Miller
attack ads with ones educat-
ing voters on the write-in pro-
cess and trying to sell herself
as a moderate candidate.

has agreed to a 1-year deal to return as
the team’s hitting coach. Terms were
not disclosed.
Before spring training, McGwire

used steroids and human growth hor-
mone on and off for a decade, starting
before the 1990 season and including
when he broke Roger Maris’ home run
record in 1998.

groups are working with the NCAA to
find new ways to enforce rules prohib-
iting improper agent-related benefits
for student-athletes, including possible
post-NCAA financial penalties that
reach into a player’s potential NFL
career.
The NFL, NFL Players Association
and sports agents are among those
involved in talks with the NCAA that
have included various proposals.
Chicago-based sports agent Rick
Smith, a member of the NCAA panel,
said that while discussions are prelimi-
nary, new rules could be in place within
3-5 months. Such rules would likely be
enforced primarily by the NFL and the
players’ union.

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi
State’s cowbells are in jeopardy.
The Southeastern Conference is
poised to levy fines against the school
for violating the league’s noisemaker
policy related to its tradition of ringing
cowbells at games.
The issue was first addressed at
the SEC’s summer meetings. The con-
ference made a 1-year rule allowing
Mississippi State fans to ring cowbells
— a proud symbol of the school —
provided it was in dead-ball situations
such as halftime, timeouts and after
touchdowns.
But cowbells are easily heard dur-
ing games, especially when opponents
are on offense. MSU athletic director
Scott Stricklin said fans must cooper-
ate or cowbells could be banned.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. —
USA Swimming announced it will open
its own investigation into the death of
open-water swimmer Fran Crippen at
a World Cup event in the United Arab
Emirates.
The governing body of swimming
in the United States said it will examine
exactly what happened to Crippen, why
it happened and what can be learned
to prevent such a death from happen-
ing again.
USA Swimming’s investigation will
be conducted independently of FINA,
the sport’s world governing body that is
also looking into Crippen’s death.

NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon will
be sponsored next season by an anti-
hunger campaign coordinated through
the AARP Foundation.
The multiyear deal will be
announced Wednesday by Hendrick
Motorsports. A person familiar with
Hendrick’s sponsorship agreement
confirmed the deal to The Associated
Press on condition of anonym-
ity because the official announcement
had not been made. The deal first
was reported Monday by The Charlotte
Observer.
According to paperwork filed with
the United States Patent and Trademark
Office, Hendrick Motorsports has
requested trademarks on two different
slogans: “Drive For Hunger” and “Drive
4 Hunger.”
The campaign will be the first
cause-related sponsorship of its kind
in NASCAR, which has struggled to
attract new business since the eco-
nomic downturn began late in 2008.

end undefeated summer/fall season
The Ottoville competition cheerleaders have compiled a mound of trophies as well
as medals, winnings of over $840 in cash and a $100 Varsity certificate. The team has
decided they did not want to end their season because they have had such a successful
run and are having so much fun. Therefore, it was unanimous that they have decided to
continue their journey competitively throughout the winter months. They started prac-
ticing in May to prepare for their cheer camp in June with the competitions starting in
the end of July. Although the competition cheerleaders at Ottoville have had very strong
teams for the past several years, they have reached a goal this year to be undefeated
and are holding a record of 74-0. Their road to success consisted of competitions held
at the Shelby County Fair, Auglaize County Fair, Wood County Fair, The University
of Findlay, Huron County Fair, Allen County Fair, New Bremenfest, Hancock County
Fair and the Kalida Pioneer Days. It is very crucial to have all members healthy and
able to participate due to each member having a spot in the routine and on the floor
competing, therefore the girls work very hard to balance their skills and rest. The team
does many team bonding outings as well as motivational speaking because cheerleading
has changed so much over the past several years and it isn’t just about “cheering, tum-
bling and dancing” anymore; these girls learn so much more than that throughout this
whole process; the coaches and others are proud to be a part of it!!! The team consists

Concerns raised over alcoholic energy drinks

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Sugary, high-
alcohol energy drinks that are popular with
college students who want to get drunk quick-
ly and cheaply came under renewed scrutiny
Monday as investigators announced that nine
freshmen had been hospitalized after drinking
them at an off-campus party.
Several states are considering outlawing
the drinks and at least two universities have
banned them from campus while the Food and
Drug Administration reviews their safety.
Washington state Attorney General Rob
McKenna called for the drinks to be banned
and sent a letter to the FDA on Monday,
saying the drinks “present a serious threat to
public health and safety.”
The issue received new attention after
the Oct. 8 party in Roslyn, a picturesque
mountain town known as the place where
part of the 1990s television series “Northern
Exposure” was filmed.
Police first responded to a report of an
unconscious female in a grocery store park-
ing lot and learned about the party from her
friends. At the home, officers found a cha-
otic scene, with students from nearby Central
Washington University passed out and so
intoxicated that investigators thought they
had overdosed on drugs.
Nine students who drank a caffeinated
malt liquor called Four Loko were hospital-
ized with blood-alcohol levels ranging from
0.12 percent to 0.35 percent, and a female
student nearly died, CWU President James
L. Gaudino said. A blood-alcohol concentra-
tion of 0.30 percent is considered potentially
lethal.
All the hospitalized students were inexpe-
rienced drinkers — freshmen ranging in age
from 17 to 19. Toxicology results showed
no drugs in their bloodstreams, though a
small amount of marijuana was reported
at the party, university police Chief Steve
Rittereiser said.
Some students admitted drinking vodka,
rum and beer with Four Loko, which is made
by Phusion Projects Inc., of Chicago.
Phusion said in a statement that people
have consumed caffeine and alcohol together
safely for years. The company said it markets
its products responsibly to those of legal
drinking age and shares with college adminis-
trators the goal of making campuses safe and
healthy environments.
“The unacceptable incident at Central
Washington University, which appears to
have involved hard liquor, such as vodka and
rum, beer, our products, and possibly illicit
substances, is precisely why we go to great
lengths to ensure our products are not sold to
underage consumers and are not abused,” the
statement said.
The FDA sent a warning letter to Phusion
Products in November 2009 asking the com-
pany for information that shows adding caf-
feine to alcoholic beverages is safe, and the
case remains open, the agency said in a state-
ment Monday.
Four Loko comes in several varieties,
including fruit punch and blue raspberry. A
23.5-ounce can sells for about $2.50 and has
an alcohol content of 12 percent, comparable
to four beers, according to the company’s
website.
Health advocates say the caffeine in the
drink can also suspend the effects of alcohol
consumption, allowing a person to consume
more than usual.
“It gets you really drunk really fast and it
gives you a lot of energy so you’re not going
to be laying down and sleeping,” said 18-year-
old CWU freshman Hyatt Van Cotthem of
Everett, Wash., who said he’s tried the bever-
age but doesn’t drink it because the taste is
“nasty.” He didn’t attend the party.
Regulating such drinks would be a good
idea, Cotthem said, because he’s seen so
many students do dumb things when drinking
it. But he and a friend also questioned that
the drink alone could have wreaked so much
havoc.
“There’s no way that Four Loko caused all
these people to just pass out,” he said.
The nine sickened students have recovered
and returned to their classes. No criminal
charges have been filed, but Rittereiser said
the investigation into the source of the alcohol
continues.

been put in solitary confine-
ment in a windowless cell
for 23 hours a day, his family
said.

Seattle, and wants the soldier
moved to a different facility.

week when he was moved
from a cell with access to a
common area and television
to one he’s locked in nearly
all the time, his father said.

Jenny Willis said she could
not discuss specifics of
Winfield’s pretrial confine-
ment, but said he is being
treated humanely and that
“everything that’s been done
has been for his security and
his safety.”

‘Free ride’ to college not so free

COLUMBIA, Mo. — A
new study suggests that the
so-called “free ride” for col-
lege scholarship athletes isn’t
quite so free.
The report by Ithaca
College researchers and a
national athletes’ advocacy
group shows that the average
“full scholarship” Division
I athlete winds up having
to pay $2,951 annually in
school-related expenses not
covered by grants-in-aid.
The shortfall represents
the difference between edu-
cational expenses such as
tuition, student fees, room
and board and ancillary costs
not covered by scholarships,
from campus parking fees
to calculators and computer
disks required for classes.
At some schools, the short-
fall can approach or exceed
tuition costs. At Arkansas-
Little Rock, for instance,
the 2009 shortfall is nearly
$11,000, said Ramogi Huma,
a former UCLA linebacker
who now heads the National
College Players Association.
“It’s really deceptive to use
the words ’full scholarship,”’
he said. “There’s never an
explanation for recruited ath-
letes that the price tag for
attending school falls short of
the scholarship amount.”
College athletes whose
academic expenses aren’t
fully covered by scholar-
ships are more susceptible
to the influence of money-
wielding sports agents, Huma
suggested. In a recent Sports
Illustrated report, a former
agent said he paid more than
30 college football play-
ers from 1990-96. Seven of
the athletes confirmed that
account.
“The amounts of money
he talked about giving these
players falls within the schol-
arship shortfalls,” Huma said.

gruesome to emerge from the
Afghan war, with allegations
that some in the unit collected
fingers from Afghan corpses
as war trophies.
After the first kill-
ing, Winfield sent troubled
Facebook messages home
to his parents, telling them
that soldiers in his unit had
deliberately killed one civil-
ian — “some innocent guy
about my age just farming”
— and planned to kill more.
He told his family he was
being threatened to keep quiet
about the plot.
His father made several
calls from the family’s home
in Cape Coral, Fla., to military
officials at Lewis-McChord
after receiving the messages
and said he begged them to
intervene. His phone records
reflect the calls, including a
12-minute conversation with
someone at the base’s inci-
dent command center.
The Army says it’s inves-
tigating how Chris Winfield’s
phone calls were handled.
Winfield has been detained
in Washington since his arrest
in May, but previously had
library privileges, a television
and access to a common area
he shared with no one else,
his father said.
The detention facility last
week moved Winfield into
another 8-foot-by-10-foot cell
to make room for someone
who had been convicted in
an unrelated case, Winfield’s
father said.
“These players are putting
everything on the line to get
a few bucks in order to make
ends meet ... and to meet their
basic necessities.”
“If they were to fully fund
scholarships, there would be
less temptation.”
A law passed in California
earlier this month requires the
state’s colleges and universi-
ties to disclose more complete
information about the actual
costs of attendance, as well
as details about uncovered
medical expenses and policies
on scholarship renewal and
transferring to other schools.
The scholarship study by
Huma’s group and Ithaca
College’s Graduate Program
in Sport Management is
based on data submitted by
individual schools to the U.S.
Department of Education.
An NCAA spokesman
called the current scholar-
ship formula “appropriate for
most student-athletes” and
noted that some can obtain
federal Pell Grants and other
need-based aid in addition to
athletic-related assistance.
The association’s Division
I Awards, Benefits, Expenses
and Financial Aid Cabinet
considered changes to the
scholarship formula last year
“allowing athletics aid up to
the cost of attendance,” but
the proposal was not endorsed
for further consideration,
said NCAA spokesman Erik
Christianson.
Another NCAA commit-
tee recently endorsed eight
separate proposals allowing
athletes to accept more finan-
cial aid — both merit- and
need-based — without affect-
ing team limits on such aid.
At Missouri-Kansas City,
which ranks fifth-highest
in the new study with aver-
age out-of-pocket expenses
of $5,030 annually, athletic
director Tim Hall said the
school is up front with recruits
about their financial responsi-
bilities beyond the scholar-
ship amount.
NEW YORK — New
York City’s bedbugs have
climbed out of bed and
marched into landmarks like
the Empire State Building,
Bloomingdale’s and Lincoln
Center, causing fresh anxiety
among tourists who are can-
celing Big Apple vacations
planned for the height of the
holiday season.
Some travelers who had
arranged trips to New York
say they are creeped out about
staying in hotels and visiting
attractions as new reports of
bedbugs seem to pop up every
few days. And officials in
Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s
administration are concerned
about the effect on the city’s
image and $30 billion tourism
industry.
The discoveries of the
bloodsucking pests at high-
profile places are often not
full-blown infestations,
or even in public areas.
Bloomingdale’s reported
finding exactly one bug in the
famous department store, the
Empire State Building had
them in the basement and
Lincoln Center’s were in a
dressing room.
But those reports, along
with bedbug discoveries in
movie theaters, hotels and
clothing chain stores, are
causing skittish travelers to
call off trips planned months
ago.
Industry professionals —
who have privately told city
officials that they are nervous
about bedbugs hurting New
York’s reputation — say pub-
licly that they are not aware
of any bedbug-related cancel-
lations. But several would-be
tourists tracked down by The
Associated Press say they
are aborting their trips here
because they fear the pests.

New York City-born man
was ordered to return from
Hawaii where he was arrested
on charges he tried to join
the U.S. military at a Times
Square recruiting station so
he could be deployed to Iraq,
desert and fight with anti-
American insurgency forces.
Abdel Hameed Shehadeh,
21, was charged with making
false statements in the midst
of a New York-based terror-
ism investigation, authorities
said Monday.
A U.S. Department of
Justice news release said
Shehadeh was arrested Friday
in Honolulu. A judge there
ordered him on Monday to
return to Brooklyn to face
charges. It was unclear when
he would appear in a New
York court.
Shehadeh’s attorney,
Matthew Winter, didn’t
immediately respond to a
phone call and e-mail request-
ing comment Monday.
“As charged in the com-
plaint, Shehadeh lied about
the purpose of his travel
to Pakistan, then he lied in
his attempt to join the U.S.
military, and lied about why
he sought to enlist,” Janice
Fedarcyk, head of New
York’s FBI office, said in
a statement. “The real pur-
pose, it is alleged, was not to
join U.S. forces, but to wage
war against them. Stopping
one prospective terrorist can
prevent untold numbers of
casualties.”
A criminal complaint
unsealed in federal court in
Majerik, from Baltimore.
She said she may not trav-
el to Manhattan next month
with her children, ages 7 and
10, like they do every year
around the holidays to shop,
catch a Broadway show and
see the Radio City Christmas
show.
“I’ve got four people trav-
eling on a train, in cabs, going
to stores and theaters, and
they could be in any of these
places? I hate to say it, but I
doubt we’re going to come
this time,” Majerik said.
Suzanne Baldwin said she
is forfeiting money spent on
reservations for a November
trip to New York City from
her home in Florida. She had
already grown accustomed to
checking hotel rooms for bed-
bugs — and has done so in
New York before — but she
is now overwhelmed at the
idea that the bugs have spread
beyond hotels.
“We thought long and hard
about this trip,” she told the
AP in an e-mail. “However,
we decided, knowing we
would lose quite a bit of
money from nonrefundable
tickets, it was not worth the
worry.”
Susannah Johnston, a yoga
teacher who lives in the New
York City suburbs, said that
she and her husband wanted
to stay overnight in Manhattan
last weekend after attending a
late concert, but that bedbugs
thwarted their plans.
“We started researching
hotels and prices, and then
we read the reviews,” she
said. “Every one of the hotels
we were considering had a
guest horror story regarding
bedbugs.”
Bloomberg said Monday
he was concerned about the
effect of bedbug hysteria on
the city’s reputation.
Brooklyn said the FBI and the
New York Police Department
had been investigating
Shehadeh “and several other
individuals in connection with
a plot to travel overseas and
wage violent jihad against the
United States and other coali-
tion military forces.”
The complaint alleged that
Shehadeh, who was born in
the United States and lived
on Staten Island, caught the
attention of U.S. authorities
by buying a one-way ticket to
Pakistan in June 2008. Once
he arrived there, Pakistani
officials wouldn’t allow
him into the country and he
returned to New York.
A follow-up investigation
found that Shehadeh had cre-
ated Internet postings and
video promoting jihad, the
complaint said.
In October 2006, the com-
plaint said, Shehadeh went
to Times Square to try to
join the Army. It said when
a recruiter asked him if he’d
traveled overseas, he lied and
said he’d only been to Israel.
Later that month, Shehadeh
tried to fly from Newark, N.J.
to Jordan, where he again was
not allowed entry. Once he
returned to the United States
on a flight to Detroit, counter-
terrorism investigators con-
fronted him about his radical
Internet writings.
The complaint said under
questioning, he admitted that
one of his Web sites was
“designed to mirror and refor-
mat the teachings of radi-
cal U.S.-born Muslim cleric
Anwar al-Awlaki” and “that
in the past, he agreed with
and sympathized with al-Qai-
da’s violent jihad against the
West.”

READING, Pa. — A
woman who secretly con-
ceived several children
through an extramarital affair
killed at least four of her
newborns, then kept their
remains in coolers or encased
in concrete in her closet until
family members found them
this year, authorities said
Monday.
Michele Kalina, 44, of
Reading, hid at least six preg-
nancies from her husband and
longtime boyfriend, according
to officials in Berks County,
where a homicide charge was
filed against the home-health
aide.
DNA tests show the bones
found in a locked closet came
from five babies, at least four
of whom were born alive,
authorities said. The boy-
friend fathered three and
possibly four of the victims.
Tests on the fifth baby were
inconclusive.
Dogs trained to search for
human remains have scoured
Kalina’s current and former
homes in the Reading area.
“I’m very confident we
have all the babies,” District
Attorney John T. Adams said
at an afternoon news confer-
ence.
Kalina has been in custody
since August on abuse-of-
corpse charges and is being
held without bail after she
was arraigned Monday on
one count of criminal homi-
cide, aggravated assault and
related charges. Additional
counts may be filed before
trial, Adams said.
A preliminary hearing
is scheduled for Thursday.
Public defender Holly
Feeney declined to comment
Monday.

House Majority Leader Tom
DeLay, saying he commit-
ted no crime, has been press-
ing for a trial since he was
indicted five years ago on
charges that he illegally fun-
neled corporate money to
help Republicans in Texas
legislative races in 2002.
DeLay is finally getting his
wish, with jury selection set to
start today for one of the most
polarizing politicians during
President George W. Bush’s
administration. DeLay’s case
had been slowed down by
appeals of pretrial rulings.
The jury was expected to
be chosen from a group of 91
people, and Senior Judge Pat
Priest said he expected a jury
to be chosen by Wednesday.
Testimony in the case was
set to begin Monday, the eve
of Election Day, with the trial
lasting at least three weeks.

She and her husband, Jeffrey,
have a 19-year-old daughter
and had a 13-year-old son
with cerebral palsy who died
in 2000. That death is not
suspicious, Adams said.
The husband and daugh-
ter found the infant remains
this summer in a closet in
several coolers, one of which
was filled with cured cement,
police said. At least four of
the babies were born at or near
term, then killed in a manner
consistent with asphyxia, poi-
soning or neglect, authorities
determined.
With only scant infor-
mation from Kalina herself,
investigators have no idea
where the babies were born
or how they died, making the
case a tough circumstantial
one to prove.
However, Adams said he
believes Kalina’s brief state-
ments to police after the
remains were found, and her
reaction to their involvement,
show evidence of a guilty
conscience. She told authori-
ties she had been pregnant
only twice, with her son and
daughter, and had never had
a stillbirth, Adams said. And
she fled her family’s apart-
ment after learning police had
been called about the bones in
late July.
The officers who first
responded to a 5 a.m. call
from her daughter did not
think the bones were human
and said she and her father
could throw them out, which
they did. Later that day, the
pair called again to say they
had found additional remains.
Investigators then suspected
they were indeed human.
