Philosophy of Education

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” said

Nelson Mandela. Education is an extremely powerful tool that must be used correctly. There are

many components that contribute to a successful education. Components such as methodology,

student learning, assessment, and environment are all crucial factors in education.

Student Learning
Student learning is critical. Teachers are responsible for developing and maintaining an

effective learning community. The most effective way to do so is through established mutual

respect between teacher and their students. Teachers must make their expectations for the

classroom clear. And more importantly, teachers must express to students that they always have

the student’s best interest in mind. Students must trust that their teacher will do everything in

their power to give them a proper education. Teachers must use established relationships with

their students to mentally assess student comprehension and make proper adjustments.

Admirable teachers make student learning the main priority.

Methodology

The way teachers enact goals for student learning is key. A teacher’s methodology is what

separates the average from the exceptional. A significant amount of time and effort goes into

planning goals for students, however, applying those goals and changes are even more

consuming. Teachers must be aware that not all students learning is the same and must be willing

to adapt and change to teach to each individual student. Teachers must be flexible and proactive

with having a backup plan.

Assessment

Assessing student learning is essential. Teachers can assess their students several ways in

an array of areas. Assessment ranges from educational content to student behavior. Educational

assessment can be formative or summative. Teachers must use formative assessment to address

comprehension in the middle of the learning goal or lesson. Summative assessment will be used

at the end of the unit or learning goal. Teachers must be proactive in assessing students make

getting everyone where they need to be in term of the learning goal.

Environment

The environment of a classroom can cause students to sink or swim. The environment a

teacher creates should instantaneously feel warm, colorful, and welcoming. But there is much

more to a successful classroom environment than what the eye can see. A teacher truly creates a

successful learning environment by putting student success first, being committed and

enthusiastic, and most importantly creates positive relationships with each student. The

environment is truly the third teacher.
