BOQ Preparation & Bill Verification

Introduction:
BOQ means bill of quantity. A comprehensive list of all items to be used in a specific project/task is
prepared and evaluated and through this list, feasibility of the project is evaluated. BOQ is prepared at
the start of any project. Bill verification is done after the execution of any project by comparing the
amount of all items practically installed and their charged rates with approved rates.

BOQ Preparation in Electrical System:

In electrical systems, the most common part for any project i.e. machine installation, giving supply for a
particular requirement is laying the cables with all accessories. Following are the main items that are
usually enlisted in electrical BOQ.

(i) Cable length for a particular cable

(ii) Cable size for a particular cable
(iii) No. of cores of cable
(iv) Cable rating|
(v) Connectors
(vi) Cable ties
(vii) Lugs
(viii) Glands
(ix) Cable tray length
(x) Cable tray size
(xi) Tray up-bend
(xii) Tray down-bend
(xiii) Nuts & Bolts
(xiv) PVC Tap
(xv) Lights
(xvi) Switches

Similarly all other items that are used in project are enlisted with their required amounts. A general
format for BOQ is given.

Vendor Contract:
Usually, for cable laying, sapphire has contract with vendors with their approved rate for different types
of cable installations. Labor cost for any project is usually included in any BOQ. BOQ list is shared with
vendor and vendor intimates labor cost for cable installation depending upon the cable size, length,
connections and nature of installation work with other necessary information. These installation charges
are included in BOQ.

Bill Verification:
After the execution of the electrical project, a sheet is prepared for bill verification. In verification sheet,
each item physically used is matched with initially approved BOQ. Each item with its quantity in BOQ is
compared with practical installation i.e. no. of cables, their size, length and ratings used practically are
same as those mentioned in BOQ. Similarly cables trays, their size and lengths, nuts & bolts, glands, lugs
and every other item is matched with BOQ. In verification, charged rates for each item are also
compared with approved rates list by vendor and they are verified. If quantity and rates, both are
verified, then BOQ is verified.
