Groth Corporation's flane anesters are designed to inhibit fla.ne propagation in gas piping sysGms
and to protect lo\ , pressure tanks containing flammable liquids. They prctect loi, flash point liquids
from odemally caused sources of heat and ignition, pro/iding increased fire protection and safety.
The flame anesters consist of t\,\o main cornponents, tile anester bases and the flame eleanent
housing. The bases serve as the connding interface to the piFing system. The housing
accommodates the flame dement and is instrumental in stopping the flarne passage. The depth of the
flame element absorbed the heat frorn the vapor f,o\ r, cooling the vapor to prevent autoignition on the
protected side.
The flame element is cornprised of small parallel fiangular passageways aligned so that an
approaching flame front is slorred dowtr and then quenched before it can propagate to the protected
side of the device.
All Groth Corporation flame elements utilize spiral vround, crimped ribbon constructed of conosion
resistant materials, to insure the best flame quenching performance with minimum pressure drop.
Depending on the design of the system in which it is used, the anester bases can include optional
ports for ternperature or pressure monitoring devices. These devices can activate waming or
shutdown systems if abnormal conditions are detected.
A flarne anester should be treated as a safety device and mdntained by a knor/edgeable repair
technician. Carefully read and understand this Manual before installing or servicing this product.

All Groth Corporation's flane aneders are bi{ircc{ional and the installalion on a tank or piring system
depends to a great odent on the design of the system. The Modd 7618 is recommended for vertical
ins.talldion in clced prpng systems or venting to atrncphere. lf a Model 7618 is in$alled in a
horizontal line, it should be equipped with drdn ports for remo\/al of condensatiofl ftorn the housing.
These series offlame aresters have 150# ANSI flange drilling cornpatibility, [30'& 36" model 7618 &
7628 have API 650 drillingl, and are pneumatically tesEd to 15 PSIG at the factory. Follow the
guidelines listed in Table 2 for flange make-up torque. The anesters are NOT rated for full flange
pressure and do not requlre high bolting torque. Recommended torque vdues are based on pressures
IMAWPI in TaUe 1. Consult factory for higher pressure applications.

1. Remove any flange protecto{s and discard all packing mderid. lnspect flange faces and flame
elernent fd danage or contamination.
2. lnspect tile g6ket seating srrface d the tank nozZe or pidng. lt must be dean, fla, free of
scratctEs, conGion and tool marks.
3. Aluminum flame anesters are fumished with flat face flanges; they should only be installed on
a mating flat face ffange with a full face gasket.
4. lnspect the gasket; make sure that the material is suitable for the application. Center the
gasket within the bolt circle.
5. Set ttle anester bet\r€en its mating flarEEs or on tfle rpzzle. Position the lifling handles and
jacking nuts to facilitate ftJture remo/al of the flane anester housing (See Maintenance
lnsfructions seclion). lnstall the studs and tighten nuts hand tight.
Notes:
6. To.qrc all fasleners to half the value listed in TaUe 2 in a staggered, altemaf ng pafrem to
proride an arenly comFessed gasket joirt.
7. Make up the final torque and check that no further nut rotation occurs at the specified torque
value.

III. TAINTENANCE
For maximum operating efficiency the elernent of a flame anester must be inspected for clogging at
r€gular inteMals. Frcquency of inspecttoo and maintenance should be based on the experience
gained in each apdication. For ease of seNice, the flane elernent housing can be easily rernored for
inspection and mdntenance vyithout remo/ing the anester frorn the line. lt is recommended that the
aneder be remo/ed for inspection d the demert d least once per year or any time that one of the
follot,ving conditions o@urs:
t{ob:
Flane aresters equipped with a steam jeket can @! be serviced in-line. The
atresier mus{ be remo/ed frorn the pipeline or tank nozzle for inspection and
mdntenance.
1. Purge the line or tank with an inert gas b€fore aftern ing to remo/e the aneder for maintenance.
CAUTION: The connecting pipeline must be free of all hazardous or flammable vapors before
inspection procedures begin. Before disassembling consult Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) for all products that were exposed to in service. The components should be cleaned
according to MSDS procedures. Take appropriate safety precautions regarding eye protection,
skin contact & respiration.
2. Refer to Fig. 1 which illu3trates a tyricd flane an€ster with the element removed.
3. Loosen the hot sing nuts and remove only thce studs necessary to withdralv the housing. Do not
rcmo/e studs with spreader nuts.
4. lf the flarne anester is in a horizontal line, attach whatever lifring equip.nent is required to rerno/e the
elernent [see u,eight table 3].
WARNING: lf not supported, the element housing will drop onto the
remaining studs when the bases are separated. Be careful to avoid contact
with the housing while separating the bases.

5. On the rernaining studs, loosen the housing nuts incrementdly while advancing ttle spreader nuts to
separate the bases. When the bases are separated sufnciently to rerno\re the housing, tighten the
housing nuts so the b6ses form a rigid assembly when the housing is retnoved.
6. lf a vertically mounted fl ne anster is used to support a reli€f vdve or similar equipment, tightening
the housing nuts after separating ttE bases will proride srficient suppod for the rdid valve.
7. Remo/e tfie housang assembly for inspectiofl. Msuafiy insped tne flarne dernent and supporting grids
for danage or concion builGup ftorn both si&s. lf the flane elernefit appears to be damaged, it
should be redaced immediatdy.
WARNING: Failure to replace a damaged flame element can render the flame arresler ineffective
8. Veriry that the dernent openings are not dogged by viarirg a light source thrq€h the detnent
passages. lf the flane dement is dirty or dogg€d it car be cleaned by one of the folloyying mefiods:
. Compressed air
. High pressure steam or water purge
o Solvent uash follo\^/ed by cornpressed air
TIP: The best melhod of deaning and frequency should be bced on lhe
experience gained in each applicaton.
9. lnspect the sealing gEsket for damagE and redace if necessErry. (See Table 6 for redacement gasket
part numbers.
10. lnstall a gasket in the counter bore cf each base. Position the element housing to align with the
counterbores. lnsert the studs and torque all fasteners to half the value listed in Table 2 in a
staggered, alternation pattem to prcvide an evenly cornpressed gasket joint
lf the anester is in high ternperature seNice or stainless steel extemd studs and nuts are used, apply
an anti-seize cqnpound $rch as mdydisulfide to dl thrcaded components.
'l'1. Make up the fiftd torque and check that no further nut rffiion occurs at the specified torque value.
The torque values are based on original gaskets supplied by Groth Corporation.
