Justification for the Theme

Teaching values to children is more important than ever. Since children spend majority of
their time in school, it should be an avenue for not only cognitive, but moral development. Sari
(2013) stressed that education is the best way to teach values to the students. Moral values should
be taught to minimize moral deterioration.

Elementary years are considered to be the formative years in education. It is within these
years that a child is being prepared for bigger responsibilities. These years lay the foundation and
are vital in the personal development of the child. Along with the other important values, diligence,
honest work and perseverance should be given emphasis. These are pivotal values. In particular,
perseverance is directly related to an individual’s ability to be successful throughout their life.
Those who persist through setbacks often gain the benefits. Hendarwati (2017) stressed that
honesty is a character value that should be empowered in childhood. He further defined honesty as
the ability to understand and distinguish right and wrong sides.
Hanson (1955) pointed out that basic to an improved quality of learning is an
understanding of the role of commitment on the part of the learner. In other words, learning can be
maximized if the learners are diligent.

Justification for the Management of Topics

Cunningsworth (1995) provides a checklist for evaluation and selection of topics when
designing materials. The criteria includes: a) variation and range of topic, b) sophistication of
content yet within the learner’s language level, c) opportunities given for students to relate to the
social and cultural contexts being presented, and d) representation of other groups (e.g. ethnic
origin, occupation, etc.). The materials adopted for this paper come from various countries. The
texts’ content generally focuses on three values: perseverance, diligence, and honest work. They use
language and concepts appropriate for sixth graders. This paper adopts the cyclical gradation
approach (Richards, 2001, p.13) to sequencing the topics as the learning items (i.e. the three values)
are reintroduced in the succeeding topics using different contexts. This paper presents the three
values as general concepts prior to dealing with their conceptual features such as values benefiting
oneself and influencing others. The types of materials such as fiction (e.g. legend, story) and non-
fiction (e.g. bibliography) are also being taught at least twice for the students to get a better
understanding of the text types. Rowntree (1994 as cited in Santos,1999) calls it a structural way of
sequencing items.
