2 Multiples of Fractions

Mikayla McCauley

Content Objectives
Standard 4.NF.4b: “Apply and extend previous understandings of
engage students’ interest in specific

multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number. Understand a

multiple of a/b as a multiple of 1/b, and use this understanding to
multiply a fraction by a whole number.

learning goals?

Success Criteria: The students will demonstrate knowledge of the

concept by correctly listing the next four multiples of a given fraction.

Language Objectives
Speaking and Listening Standard 1: Engage effectively in a range of
collaborative discussion (one-one-one, in groups, and teacher led) with
diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas
and expressing their own clearly.

The lesson begins with a review on yesterday’s math lesson

on multiples of unit fractions. Each table group will be given a

to solve the problem and make sure the whole group
remembers the information. Then, I will pose a new problem
and ask them to identify what operation will you use to solve
it (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division). They will
turn to their neighbor and

After we share, everyone will get out their “math tools”

(expo marker and eraser). We will begin by working on
solving this problem together. I will be using my screen beam
to draw the picture on my laptop which will project onto the
board, and the students will follow along by drawing the
same picture on their desk. As a whole class, we will discuss
the problem and work through it to find a solution.

Then, students will reflect on their prediction. They will turn

back to their neighbor and tell them whether their prediction
was correct or incorrect.
All the students will be given a number line that is broken up
into fifth size parts. We will start by labeling all the fifth size
pieces as multiples of 1/5 (review from yesterday’s lesson).
Then, we will talk about how we can use our number line to
show multiples of 2/5. We will draw on our number line and
find the first 5 multiples of 2/5. We will then use our number

line to decide how we would write 6/5 as a product of a

whole number and a unit fraction.

After this, I will give each table a set of 4 different number

line problems. Each student will take one of the problems
and solve it. Once they have their solution, they will present
their problem and solution to the class. If they had a hard
time finding the correct answer, they can ask their group to
help them find the solution.

Then, we will open up our math books for independent

practice. This will allow me the time to walk around and help
students individually as they work. The last 10 minutes of the
lesson will be reserved for the completion of an exit ticket
which will serve as a quick, formative assessment so I can
check their understanding of the lesson.

intervention time. We meet as a grade level and use our
data to decide what tasks to focus on and split up all of our
students based on their current level of understanding. This
will give those students three days of intervention that is
tailored to their specific needs.
