1971 | The founding of the University

In 1971, after teaching the Transcendental Meditation program around the world for the
previous 16 years, Maharishi began to formulate a new science that would offer a complete,
systematic understanding of consciousness. He called the new discipline the Science of
Creative Intelligence (SCI).
Maharishi envisioned SCI as a supplementary course that could be taught at universities
around the world. It would make all fields of knowledge meaningful, revealing the laws of
nature at the basis of math, art, biology, and every other area of study. After studying SCI,
a student would easily be able to connect any subject to his or her own Self.
In 1971, SCI was introduced at such universities as Yale and Stanford with great suc-
cess. That summer, Dr. Robert Keith Wallace, a post-doctoral researcher at Harvard
whose Ph.D. dissertation had included the first research on the Transcendental Medita-
tion program, organized a large SCI symposium on the Amherst campus of the University
of Massachusetts.
At that conference, in the presence of leading scientists like Buckminster Fuller,
Maharishi announced his intention to create a university whose entire curriculum would
incorporate the Science of Creative Intelligence. Its name would be Maharishi Interna-
tional University.

“Knowledge is for action, action for achievement, achievement for fulfill-

does not know himself, then the basis of knowledge is missing. In this situation
of baseless knowledge, fulfillment will always remain baseless. This is what
mankind had been left to face concerning life throughout the ages.
“Now in this scientific age, it is high time for knowledge to be complete and
for fulfillment to be profound for every man, for every society, for the whole
human race.”— Maharishi, from the original MIU Catalog

1979 | The first Golden Dome – generating invincibility and peace

In October 1979, the University and the community began construction of a 25,000-square-
foot wooden dome in the center of campus — a Golden Dome. This would be the first
building in the world dedicated to group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and
TM-Sidhi programs, including Yogic Flying.
Construction companies had advised allowing 2 ½ years to build such a dome. But the
crew was intent on completing the building by January 12, just over 100 days later.
People from all over the country came to help, working around the clock.
To meet the deadline, the construction schedule specified eight separate, specific days
for pouring concrete. On each of these days, the temperature would have to rise above
32 degrees and remain there until the concrete dried. And on each of these days, it did
— sometimes rising as much as 40–50 degrees in a single day. And on each occasion, the
concrete dried in a single day.
The inauguration took place on January 12, 1980, right on schedule, one of the most
moving and exhilarating events in University history. A year earlier on January 12, the
temperature had been just 8 degrees. On this day it was a sunny 54 degrees.
The dome structure was named the Maharishi Patanjali Golden Dome of Pure Knowl-
edge, after the Vedic sage Patanjali, who brought forth the Yoga Sutras, the source of the
TM-Sidhi program and Yogic Flying. A second Golden Dome was completed in 1981.
Throughout the world, these two Golden Domes symbolized group practice of Yogic Flying
— Maharishi’s technology for creating invincibility for every nation and peace for the world.

Maharishi visited the campus

at the end of 1979 while the
Golden Dome was being
constructed. He said:
“This first Dome will create
a very powerful influence
of coherence in the world
consciousness. We’ll continue
to purify world consciousness,
day after day and week after
week and year after year —
generation after generation.
It’s going to prove a blessing
for the whole of mankind.”

The first Golden Dome was constructed practically around the clock in the middle of
winter, and in a fraction of the predicted time.

1983–1984 | Giving the world “a sweet taste of Utopia”

— 7,000 Yogic Flyers create a global wave of harmony

In 1974, scientists at Maharishi University of Management discovered that when just 1%

of a city’s population was instructed in the Transcendental Meditation program, the qual-
ity of life in those cities began to rise, reflected in reduced crime rate. They called this effect
the Maharishi Effect.
When Maharishi brought out the advanced TM-Sidhi program in 1977, he predicted
that an even smaller number would be required to begin to transform society — the square
root of 1% of a population practicing together in one place.
At the end of November 1983, Maharishi called for Yogic Flyers from all over the world
to come to Fairfield to give the world a sweet taste of utopia. The goal was to assemble
7,000 Yogic Flyers in one place for several weeks —the square root of 1% of the world’s
population at that time. This would be the largest social experiment in history — and it
would be held in just three weeks.

Yogic Flyers participating in the historic Taste of Utopia Assembly gather in front of the
Maharishi Patanjali Golden Dome of Pure Knowledge on the campus of
Maharishi University of Management at the end of December 1983.
UNIVERSIT Y FIRSTS

Over the next three weeks, the campus was transformed. A 60,000-square-foot
Grand Assembly Hall was built. A 200-unit mobile home park was installed. Another
15,000-square-foot building was constructed.
And by the end of December, 8,000 Yogic Flyers from 46 countries had arrived. Dur-
ing those magical three weeks, a wave of harmony and goodwill swept the world. Stock
markets soared all over the world, many setting new records repeatedly. International con-
flict eased. Heads of state became more positive and cooperative. Throughout the coun-
try, crime, air traffic fatalities, and highway traffic fatalities dropped significantly. Traffic
fatalities dropped in countries as far away as Australia and South Africa. Infectious disease
rates dropped throughout the country and as far away as Australia. These outcomes were
predicted in press conferences in advance of the Assembly.
Based on this success, Maharishi called for a permanent group of 7,000 Yogic Flyers in
the United States — to create the Maharishi Effect on a permanent basis and transform
the world. Maharishi said, “The world can never remain the same old suffering world.”

Maharishi gathers with more than 7,000 Yogic Flyers in the

Grand Assembly Hall during the Taste of Utopia Assembly.
“The knowledge of the laws of nature in our possession today,” he declared,
“is sufficient to eliminate all suffering and raise life to its full dignity.”

1993 | Reducing crime in the nation’s capital —

the National Demonstration Project

In the summer of 1993, under the leadership of Dr. John Hagelin, the University orga-
nized a National Demonstration Project in Washington, DC This would be the most
highly public demonstration of the Maharishi Effect to date, testing its efficacy in reducing
crime and social stress and improving the effectiveness of government. In particular, Dr.
Hagelin predicted violent crime would drop by 20%.
In this carefully controlled experiment, the peace-creating group increased from 800
to 4,000 over the two-month period. Although violent crime had been steadily increas-
ing during the first five months of the year, soon after the start of the study, violent crime
(measured by FBI Uniform Crime Statistics) began decreasing and continued to drop until
the end of the experiment (maximum decrease 23.3%), after which it began to rise again.
The likelihood that this result could be attributed to chance variation in crime levels
was less than two parts per billion. The drop in crime could not be attributed to other pos-
sible causes, including temperature, precipitation, weekends, and police and community
anticrime activities.
The study was published in Social Indicators Research, one of the leading social science
journals.

2000 | Rebuilding the campus – in harmony with natural law

In 2000, we embarked on an ambitious multi-year project to reconstruct the campus. The

The reconstruction announcement opened a flood of financial support, and the face of the

2006 | Creating national coherence —

the Invincible America Assembly

In July 2006, inspired by Maharishi, the University launched a major initiative to create
coherent national consciousness, the basis of a peaceful, prosperous, invincible country.
This was the Invincible America Assembly.
Its aim: to build the size of the Yogic Flying group at the University to the square root
of 1% of the U.S. population. This would be the largest scientific experiment ever to moni-
tor the effects of a large group of advanced meditation experts on national economic and
social trends.
Since 2006, we have seen signs of rising national coherence and positivity. In 2010, for
example, the FBI reported an unexpected 50-month decrease in violent crime in the U.S.
Federal law enforcement officials neither anticipated the sustained drop in violent crime,
nor have they identified a cause. But before the Assembly started, Dr. John Hagelin pre-
dicted a dramatic crime decrease to the global press.
Almost every day Assembly participants report extraordinary experiences of higher
states of consciousness — experiences of the highest levels of human development,
unique in the world’s spiritual literature. They simply close their eyes, dive within using
Maharishi’s technologies of consciousness, experience the dynamically silent bliss of their
own Self — and the world around them is enriched and transformed.

“With 2,000, you will begin to see the desired
