A. Background of the Study

Nutritionists often describe Bitter Gourd (Momordica Charantia) as one of the healthiest

vegetables for it contains a lot of nutrients ranging from iron, magnesium, potassium vitamin C

and A. It also contains twice the calcium of spinach and beta-carotene of broccoli. Various anti-

oxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds are present in bitter gourd, which is beneficial in our

health and is also known to It also helps in lowering the bad cholesterol levels, thus reducing the

risk of heart disease and stroke. Among kids, it is infamous for its bitter taste making it harder

for parents to feed their kids with bitter gourd.

Bitter gourd or calabash is a delicately flavored, Cucurbita family vegetable. Botanically,

calabash belongs to the broader Cucurbitaceae (gourd) family of plants, in the genus: Lagenaria.

Bitter gourd is a fast growing, annual climber (vine) that requires adequate sunlight for flowering

and fruiting. It can be grown in a wide range of soils and need trellis support for a spread.

Cookies are a snack that is well-known for kids. Its main ingredients can come from

different fruits and vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, apple banana and corn. In regards about

this matter the group decided to make bitter gourd into cookies which is an all -time favorite

snack kids want to devour which will minimize or remove the taste of its bitterness while all the

while retaining its nutritional benefits. This study aims to show a new innovation of bitter gourd

by turning it into an all-time favorite snack that every kid wants to devour.

B. Statement of the Problem

This study entitled,“ Better Bitter Gourd Cookies” aims to test the following:
Is the cookies acceptable among kids in terms of its:

a. taste

b. texture

c. color

d. aroma

e. consistency

Is the bitter gourd cookies beneficial to the kids in terms of its

a. nutritional content (conducted through proximate analysis)

Are bitter gourd cookies cheap enough for consumers to afford it at a lower and

more affordable price?

C. Objectives of the Study

This study entitled, “Better Bitter Gourd Cookies” aims to test the cookies` acceptability

among kids in terms its taste, texture, color, aroma and consistency.

It also aims to know if bitter gourd cookies beneficial to the kids in terms of its

nutritional conducted through its proximate analysis. And lastly, it aims to show that bitter gourd

cookies are cheap enough for consumers to afford it at a lower and more affordable price
D. Significance of the Study

a. Community

This study is beneficial to a community especially to the children who will

eat the nutritious bitter gourd cookies for it will help them to eat nutritious food

without the problem of its taste.

b. Kids

This study would help kids to eat a whole bunch of bitter gourd. By eating the

product made, the kids had already eaten one meal of bitter gourd. Kids are known as

picky eater so this product would help them consume bitter gourd easily.

c. Parents

Kids being picky eater had been a constant headache for parents especially in

regards about making them eat bitter gourd. Through this study, parents can have

a new sidekick on making kids eat bitter gourd in a more healthier and delicious

snack.

d. Community

This study would not only help the community but also the researchers.

Through this study it would not just help them finish their research but it would

also help them to learn new things regarding about the outcome of the study.
e. Future researchers

- The results of this research study can be used as basis for future

reference and it can provide results that can be helpful in future researches.

E. Scope and Delimitations

This research study entitled “Better Bitter Gourd Cookies” will be conducted at Aurora

Senior High School, Ballesteros, Aurora, Isabela from January to _____________.

This study is limited only in proving Better Bitter Gourd Cookies. This will be tested

through a conduct of 30 sets of survey to the children of Aurora, Isabela raging from the age of

9-18 years old to test its acceptability in terms of its taste, texture, color, aroma and consistency.

10 sets of respondents comes from elementary, 10 sets of respondents comes from junior high

school and the last 10 set of respondents was from senior high school. The respondents were

chosen in a non -random sampling. The nutritional content would be analyzed through proximate

analysis wherein the baked cookies will be analyzed pieces by pieces. In terms of its

affordability, cost analysis will be used. The results that will be shown will be analyzed and will

be processed for future reference.
