Where: n = number of feed water = 5

tsat Pt = saturation temperature of steam = 527.4 ºF

= 275.2 ºC

t cond= condensing temperature = 91.69 ºF

Final feed water temperature = 0.9 55+1 (275.2 – 50.93889) + 50.93889

= 219.1347 ºC

Final feed water temperature = 395 ºF

Selection of Extraction Pressures:

Temperature rise in each heater = 395-91.695 = 60.662 ºF

Feed water outlet temperature of each heater will be:

First Heater = 91.69 + 60.662 = 152.352 ºF

Second Heater (dearator) = 152.352 + 60.662 = 213.014 ºF

Third Heater = 213.014 + 60.662 = 273.676 ºF

Fourth Heater = 273,676 + 60.662 = 334.338 ºF

Fifth Heater = 334.338 + 60.662 = 395 ºF

40 Megawatt Tampakan Steam Power Plant 12

Saturation temperature in each heater will be feed water outlet temperature plus the TD of 5
with the corresponding saturated pressure:

First Heater = 152.352 + 5 = 157.352 ºF , 4.459 psia

Second Heater (dearator) = 213.014 + 5 = 2138 ºF , 14.99 psia

Third Heater = 273.676 + 5 = 278.676 ºF , 48.18 psia

Fourth Heater = 334.338 + 5 = 339.338 ºF , 116.8 psia

Fifth Heater = 395 + 5 = 400 ºF , 247.1 psia

With 5% pressure loss in the extraction piping, the optimum extraction pressures will be:

First Heater = 4.459 psia ÷ 0.95 = 4.69368 psia

Second Heater (dearator) = 14.99 psia ÷ 0.95 = 15.7789 psia

Third Heater = 48.18 psia ÷ 0.95 = 50.7158 psia

Fifth Heater = 247.1 psia ÷ 0.95 = 260.10526 psia

TURBINE AND GENERATOR EFFICIENCY

From Fig 9-27 (Power Plant Theory and design by Potter), for 300 superheat, 4% exhaust loss,
1.25% mechanical losses, 3600 RPM:

Assumed Generator Efficiency = 98.5 %

With initial pressure of 850 psig:

Engine efficiency of turbine and generator = 78.4%

From Fig 9-28 (PPTD) for superheat = 900-527.4 = 372.7 ºF

Correction factor = 0.99

The corrected turbine efficiency will be:

RCR = since 98.75 % mechanical efficiency,

Actual generator efficiency (fig 9-29 PPTD) = 97.5%

Actual Engine efficiency = RCR x Em xEg
Actual Engine efficiency = 81.127 x 0.9875 x 0.975

TURBINE CONDITION CURVE

From article 9-12 PPTD, steam entering a turbine must travel through the main stream valve
(stop or throttle valve) which includes a strainer, steam chest, and governor valves; all of which
h cause a pressure drop. Friction loss through this equipment would be about 4%.

Thus, the pressure after throttle valve is:

HEAT BALACE CALCULATION

Since the air ejector requires 1500 lb per hr (as recommended in PPTD), the boiler flow will be
throttle flow plus the required air ejector flow, which is:

Boiler out flow = 313730.4 lb Hr + 1500 lb Hr

Boiler out flow = 315230.4 lb Hr

From article 11-7 PPTD, the water entering the boiler will be this same quantity plus 2%
additional for the make up from the evaporator to take care of the losses throughout the plant,
such as boiler blowdown and soot blowing.

Thus,

flow of water entering boiler = 315230.4 x 1.02

= 321535.008 lb Hr

Using 6400 lb per hr as the make up, the flow of water into the boiler will be 321630.4 lb Hr

Internal KW =
3413

Internal KW = (313730.4)(1453)-(21493.3888)(1331.3095) -
(26 775.68668)(1271.27552)-(17523.88125)(1211.24154)
-(4054.71565)(1143.09486) – (14169)(1081.276)
-(229633.1486)(1000.24483)

3413

Internal KW = 35841.04 KW

Thus, the net output of the turbine for assumed throttle flow will be:

Internal output: 35841.04 KW

Electrical losses: 1000.00 KW

Mechanical losses: 500.00 KW

34341.04 KW
40 Megawatt Tampakan Steam Power Plant 26

This output is far enough for the needed output. To obtain a more accurate answer, the addition
in throttle flow would be approximated by determining the steam rate based on the internal
kilowatt. The correction in this case would be:

321630 .4 lb Hr
(40000 – 34341.04) x = 50 782.387 lb Hr
35841 .04 kW

In order to determine the output by the extraction factor method, first find all the extraction
factors and the non-bleeding steam rate:

Extraction factors:

h7′ − h2′ 1331.3095−1000.24483

5th bleed = = = 0.73122
h1′ −h2′ 1453−1000.24483

lb
Non-bleeding steam rate = 34131453-1000.24483 = 7.53829
internal KW

The throttle flow required for an output of 40 000 KW with 1500 KW mechanical and electrical
losses will be:

Non-bleeding throttle flow = 41 000 KW x 7. 53829 = 312 839.035 lb Hr

40 Megawatt Tampakan Steam Power Plant 27

Replacement steam:

5th bleed: 21 493.3888 x 0.73122 = 15716.39576

4th bleed: 26 775.68668 x 0.5986 = 16027.92605

3rd bleed: 17523.88125 x 0.46603 = 8166.654379

2nd bleed: 4054.71565 x 0.31557 = 1279.3033

1st bleed: 14169 x 0.17897 = 2535.929546

Thus, the throttle flow required when bleeding = 356 565.244 lb Hr

Recalculating:

Entering boiler = 356 565.244 lb Hr x 1.02

Entering boile = 363696.5489 lb Hr
