NAIROBI SCHOOL
Nairobi School was established in 1902 as a European Nairobi School by the Uganda Railway
Authority. At that time, it was for whites only. It was located at different sites until 1929 when it
was built at the present site. In 1931 it was renamed “PRINCE OF WALES” and established the
motto “TO THE UTTERMOST”.
In 1962 the School became multiracial with 4 African and 4 Asian boys being admitted.
7
In 1965 (after Independence) the name of the school (Prince of Wales) was changed to Nairobi
School. Nairobi School continued to be a high cost school until the Government opened doors to
every Kenyan and directed that fees be moderated so that ordinary Kenyans can be admitted to
this School.
The School has maintained the good traditions that were established by the pioneers and has
modified some of them in order to fit with the changing times and changing society.
The School believes in developing a whole person. It therefore, encourages every student to work
to the uttermost in both curricular and co-curricular activities in order to develop their full potential.
The School is sponsored by the Anglican Church of Kenya, (formerly CPK), the Presbyterian
Church of East Africa and the Methodist Church in Kenya. The community has therefore, a strong
Christian tradition and respects all other religions.
During the weekdays, all boys worship in the School Chapel. On Sundays, the Protestant Church
members worship in the School Chapel while the Catholics worship in the School Hall. Attendance
for worship is compulsory for all boys in the School. The School also has a prayer room for the
Muslims.
The School emphasizes on other values that are necessary for life such as courtesy, manners,
dress, punctuality and all that makes up a reasonable and acceptable code of behaviour.
As every student joins Nairobi School, he is expected to conform to certain norms. He will further
be expected to show independence of thought, self-reliance, personal responsibility and self-
sufficiency in handling his tasks.
NAIROBI SCHOOL
SUMMARY OF GUIDELINES IN EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR
(A MUST FOR ALL STUDENTS AND PARENTS)
Generally, the School community expects that all persons associated with the School will do their uttermost
to make life manageable in the School. It is expected that every student will use common sense at all time,
behave well and treat each other well in order to grow as friendly members of the Patcharian fraternity.
The following are some guidelines:-
1. A student in Nairobi School will respect God, respect all other members of the community and respect himself. As a
School established on Christian faith and belief, all students will attend School assemblies, parade and prayer meetings.
8
2. As an education institution, every student who joins Nairobi School will work to the uttermost to achieve top grades in
the subjects that he takes. As much as possible, the KCPE mark should be maintained or improved during the course of
the Secondary education. A student who deliberately declines in performance may be required to seek admission in
alternative institution.
3. Students will maintain cleanliness at all times. Personal hygiene must be maintained by every student. Every student has
a responsibility to work and maintain the prescribed areas. Environmental conservation is a requirement by all.
4. All students remain in the School throughout except when permitted to go out during official functions. In very exceptional
cases, a student who must go home during the term will be issued with a leave pass, which must be countersigned by the
parent and surrendered to the Housemaster on return. Sneaking out of school shall lead to suspension.
5. Every student will maintain, conserve and account for furniture and all the equipment given to them by the School.
6. Every student’s fees must be paid at the prescribed time. Failure to pay fees will result in the student being sent home.
7. Students will wear the prescribed school uniforms at all times during the term. Home clothes, mobile phones, laptops,
radios or electronic gadgets are not allowed into the School. Such unauthorised items will be confiscated and not
returned to the defaulter and may lead to automatic exclusion from the school. The fleece jacket should not have a
hood and it will only be won at night or during weekends. Black laced shoes are the only accepted foot wear.
8. Smoking, tattooing, ear piercing, drinking alcohol or being involved in drug abuse will lead to immediate and automatic
expulsion from School. Being involved in acts of lawlessness or rudeness to authority will lead to immediate and/or
automatic expulsion. Satanism, Homosexuality, rape and any other infamous conduct may also lead to automatic
exclusion.
9. Bullying or ‘monolising’ will draw severe punishment for the bullies leading to exclusion from the School. Fighting may
also lead to exclusion from school. In both cases the student will be suspended from school.
10. Every student must be loyal to the School and must be ready and willing to contribute positively (by making suggestions
through the class representatives or the class teachers or the suggestion box or the housemasters) without fear. This
way we shall create a wonderful home – The Nairobi School.
11. Each student ‘shall’ be a member of at least one club and participate in one sport or game. Students who excel in
academics will be allowed to lead others as members of the student council. Improper leadership will result in suspension
and demotion.
12. Suspension will lead to punishment or appearing before the Board of Management.
